Do you let your dog off lead ?
Re: Do you let your dog off lead ?
We do let molly off lead, probley more than we should infact, she is great with people and other dogs, but to be totally honst her recall aint great if she does see someone she is off to go and get some attention unfortunatly as strangers have always given her so much fuss and attention.
We tend to let her off if nobody is about really, but if small children around or people reasonably close then she goes back on the lead.
We often just attach her 15 meter lead and let her go that way if she decides something else is more interesting can can soon get hold of her, but generally she is really good we play fetch twice a day at the local park/greenland and she is happy to just go fetch her ball.

We used to let Bruno off the lead untill a jumped a oldish guy and decided it was high time to train him, so he is now on a 15ft training lead which is helping with his recall but it also give him the freedom to roam abit, but we are thinking about putting a muzzle on him as he eats everything when he is out and he has swallowed it before we can get it out, we have try to train him to leave but he is a devil at times

Having a muzzle will do you know favours, nor the breed. Moo will guzzle anything, including a dead jellyfish! You have to try and be one step ahead, really in my opinion not needed!!

I know Ive been looking at them and they dont look strong enough but if you do come across one id love it if you let me know and I only pay £6 for my lunge line so bargainAyden-J wrote:Gem they're not retractable.I was going to get one of those extendable leads but they were all too thin and flimsy. Its sort of like a lunge line so I doubt you'd want to waste £15-£16 on buying something thats near enough exactly what you already have.

I usually let Gus and Kelly off lead all the time, they come back when you call them.....maybe just because they know we're going home and that's where they can get all the treats and food
Now with Maybel,we keep her on lead unless it is a fenced area because we are still training her,but she will be let off always in no time

Re: Do you let your dog off lead ?
we r trying to walk on the lead at the moment at 10 weeks she dances round and round, though i hope to be able to let her off when she is older and trained to come back along with my missey my miniture dax.
I have always concentrated on the sit and stay comand with my other dogs. First on a short lead then on an extended lead along with treats recall follows quickly (the way to most dogs is through their stomachs)
When it comes to other dogs correction begins on the lead and only when they react in the right manner (no pulling, barking ect..) do i consier letting them off. Though i must say this is the first staffy i have the pleasure to own and have already been met with the stubben streek. iv had plently of mix breads, a rotty and a collie which this has always worked with. It is a lovely sight when your dog has the freedom off the lead.

Re: Do you let your dog off lead ?
we'll we've let enzo off the lead all the time since we got him and its been fine, he likes to play so yeah you have to be on top off him when another dog comes in sight but he's usually alright, i find lowering your tone and being assertive so he knows that if he does go he'll get a little skelp on his return always works, ppl would say never hit a dog but a little one to teach them rite from wrong is allowed in my books, a dog you cant trust and pulls all the time on a lead is a chore to own and no fun in my eyes, end of the day its a strong terrier and its got to know that your above it and your say is final on all occasions

Bundy is only off the lead if we're in a dog park and there is no-one else around. He's not very dog friendly, unfortunately.

Sometimes - as long as there are not to many people or other dogs around, as that makes Cassie to excited. Her recall is getting better so hopefully in time and as she gets calmer she'll be allowed off all the time

Nope and I never will in my area. Maybe if I move to the country where there are big open fields, but I will NEVER trust Saxon off leash in the middle of a busy city. There are way to many factors that I cannot control!!!

Re: Do you let your dog off lead ?
Thai has been off the lead from the age of 14 weeks and is good as gold. Its other dogs that seem to be the problem, he is so friendly but at the same time solid and i think other dogs get threatened so they attack him. he just backs off then thinks its a game and runs back up to them. lol

Yes, once we are away from roads. Nearly all the dogs we meet large and small are his pals, and they rush off into corn or sugarbeet crops (maybe the farmer would not like this) but they sure have great fun, he is good off the lead, but only as he has got older and calmed down.

Re: Do you let your dog off lead ?
My dog is only on lead if i have to go on public transport. Otherwise hes off lead and walks to heel besides me. It really impresses other dog owners but to be truthful i've never really trained him in this, hes just followed me with his nose in line with my leg since he was a puppy. I've taught him 'wait' for when we reach roads and 'heel' if he starts to walk ahead. Hes walked to heel across fields, across busy town centres, past a bitch in heat and past other aggressive dogs and hes never ran off. However he'll happily stand and wait for me to put a lead on and is fine on lead, he just tends to 'lean' on the lead as opposed to pulling when hes excited.
I'm very lucky to have a dog like him.

Yes you are very lucky to have a dog like Romeo. In my village there are two staffies like that, I am full of envy. Did try to make this happen with Zak froma puppy , but he always got distracted or ran off and got me panicing and chasing him. He is good now though, and when away from traffic is always off the lead, he is interested in other dogs, and has his special pals and loves a game with them, a very socialable boy.

Re: Do you let your dog off lead ?
we let lemmy off the lead. we know which dogs in the park play nice so if they are there we let him go. we take walks through the woods and over fields where we let him go and on the beach we let him go. you get to know the places and times in your area where and when you can let them off lead and with who. lemmy's friends on the park are a good bunch and consist of 2 huge rotties, an 11 year old staffie bitch, a jack russel, 2 labs and a border collie they all play nice and chase each other all over the park. the rotties are sweeties and let the little ones climb all over them. socialisation is the key to having a dog that can be let off the lead from time to time.

Hi Julie,
My boy is Black/Brindle too. We have had him from a pup, and he was mad, and loving . Now at10years he has calmed down so much and recoving from a knee op. He follows me around, has to be so close, nearly fall over him . Luckily as I am retired, he has lots of company. Yes socialisation is so important, and adds to their pleasure too , Sometimes when we are out and no pals around , I can tell he is on the lookout for them. What a lot of fun and joy these dogs are.

Re: Do you let your dog off lead ?
Daves been let off the lead since he was allowed out after his injections first just in the tennis courts until he got used to coming back on command, which involved alot of me running up and down calling his name and getting him to follow me,he is only ever on his lead for a couple of minutes a day (the park is at the bottom of my street ).
Im quite shocked how many people dont let there dogs off the lead it would take hours of walking to burn off the same amount of energy as a good hour of running around like lunatic like dave does.

Caryll wrote:I've clicked 'sometimes', but actually he gets let off the lead every day, I just have to be careful when. He's a pain with other dogs - if he sees one he's off & I can't get him back! If there's no one around I'll let him off & he chases around like a mad thing, especially if I take his boomer ball. I have to be careful with other dogs cause although he's been socialised he doesn't like all dogs, and it doesn't take much to set him off.
Pretty much the same for me but Tilly just wants to play with the other dogs and make friends with the owners, no problem there but the other dogs don't want to always play and surprising how many people go out in their good clothes to walk the dog then come back with muddy Tilly prints off them ! Always put her back on the lead when I see others unless we have previous experience and know the dog, but sometimes I get a little distracted. Normally if she has only just seen them I can command her to stop , but if she's half way there and I haven't noticed I have no chance . Slowly getting there though

Re: Do you let your dog off lead ?
Yup boys get let off lead alot, if i see another dog i always put them back on leads.
Stan adores anyone and anything he really is the friendliest dog i know and alot off people have commented on his nature.
Hooch gets on with other dogs but cannot bare too have a jumpy out of control dog in his face which i dont blame him.
Had it the other day a lab off lead running in there faces and hooch told it off and i exchanged words with the owner of the lab and told him too get it under control. he had the check too say i dont have too my dog dosnt attack, yeah cos a bark is attacking and with that kind of attitude no wounder the dogs out of control.
When i took stan for a walk yesterday he was off lead n so was this collie cross we were playing fetch and this dog came running over barking his head off getting in stans face and chasing him when he was going to fetch his frisbee, but i just smiled too myself and chuckled that the staff is the one ignoring the out of control colliex and that the owners were in there 40s-50s and should know better.
Im sure some people lack common sense and responsibility for there dogs.

I've clicked sometimes because let her off, until she sees another dog and she is off to play...only problem is I don't always know the other dogs and their Behavours
Re: Do you let your dog off lead ?
i let blayde off his lead alot, he is very good as soon as i say "on ur lead" he stands there n waits 4 me put it on. my partner let him off his lead the second time we ever walkd him which was about 12weeks and he didnt leave his side.
i put him on his lead wen there are other dogs about or if a person is walkin by us bcuz otherwise he'd jump up them 4a fuss.
i think its important 2 teach them to sit before crossin a road bcuz it teachs them abit of road awarnes- althogh i still wudnt trust him 100% by a road incase ther was a cat or anuva dog, he wudnt think twice about runnin across then

Re: Do you let your dog off lead ?
I did when she was just 10 - 24 weeks .. to burn off her energy without the long walks and ball play in the garden & basement, she does like to be running free.
But it didn't last long as there are far to many irresponsible teenagers calling & teasing her now she's looking bigger , out of control dogs running up out of nowhere and far too much un-collected dog poop everywhere , and where ever I take her there are roads close by,. don't want to risk an accident.

Re: Do you let your dog off lead ?
Sometimes- Our city has a leash law, A city ordinance requires that your pet remain on a leash when it is not on your property. The leash should not be more than six feet long. When you walk your pet, you must carry along supplies that will allow you to clean up any solid waste deposited by your animal.
Also, our apartment complex has a leash law where all animals have to be on a leash. They have recently put in a small fenced area where we have to sit with our dogs and let them play if we would like where they can be off lead, so there and the big doggie park is the only places daisy is really off lead, other than the obvious in the house.
we have done training with her, but never any off lead I was always worried she would run because we dont have the area to work with her. there has been a few times we have been somewhere else and she has run from the house to the car when we tell her where to go. I would love to be able to know if we could trust her off lead, but its so tough with the street as our front yard.

Re: Do you let your dog off lead ?
romeo is off lead about 70% of the time. i'm lucky that even though i live in the capital i live on the outer areas so its a bit more country. i have good recall with him so when i see a situation coming like kids, other dogs, or a bike (he has a thing for bikes) i just bring him back leash him and keep going, when the coast is clear, i let him off again. But like i said, Romeo has really good recall, even when he is excited, but i like to be extra careful

All the time, Millie's recall is solid and there isnt a main road near me, lots of grass for her to run on. Obviously if we were near a road though I would!
Casey is mostly off the lead but she doesnt go for long walks as she just refuses becaue of her bad paws But she never ventures far anyway, she always stays at your side

i dont let Trouble off as he has a bad leg , it has taken nearly 2 years to heal with the help of a vet , and since his injury and not able to interact with other dogs he has become a bit dog aggresive with bigger dogs so for the time being he is on a long extender lead in the park so i still have control

Sometimes, her recall can be a little inconsistant and needs some more work!
However she does like to chase sticks, I just need to have one hidden behind my back to use to get her to come running back.

I do when we are away from people and other dogs, my wife would never let her off the lead and my young lad who is 14 isn't allowed to unless I am there

Re: Do you let your dog off lead ?
Yes.
He has a strong recall, a lengthy sit-lie-stay, and plenty of open space to run around in.
I'll put a lead on if people are around, to ease their own perceptual fears, but he's very well socialised - I used to own a gym and he met 100s of people every single week.
He also likes cats.

Re: Do you let your dog off lead ?
i voted all the time, in reality its about 95%. i only put her on lead if i'm walking next to a main road or if there are other dogs, as she's either fine or a bit narky with dogs she doesnt know (luckily where i am roads and other dogs arnt a regular occurance )

Re: Do you let your dog off lead ?
I clicked 'sometimes.' Loki's recall is good, the only issue with it is that when he sees dogs or people, he'll lose focus a bit so I'll have to call him twice, but when he snaps out of it, he's running like mad. I do put him on the lead when people or dogs are close-ish though, because I do reckon he'd come back, but I don't want to chance it. There have been times where he's spotted people before me, but I've called him back, and when he sees a dog, I put him on the extendable lead and will call him back and he'll still come. But I'm not ready to risk it yet.

I've put sometimes as Skye loves chasing footballs and does tend to knock people and other dogs flying when saying hello
Buster I na with other dogs but has a great recal so if no one around they both go off if a friend has their dog then Skye is allowed off but bus stays on lead

do you let your dog of lead?
My Stan is my man hes great of lead very friendly with dogs kids cats not too sure on ducks and swans lol (scares him) he has non distructable ring (yes none disructable) he cmes bac 99% of the time the 1% its cos hes too busy sniffing i distract his attention with kids around and other dogs but trust him with all he has sooo much energy i wouldnt be able to knaker him out lol he loves to play chase the ring and tease us by not giving it back till hes ready lol. I always have a lead in case other dogs are not as friendly or near roads etc...

Re: Do you let your dog off lead ?
all depends where we are and whos around, as he is still a pup so he thinks EVERYONE (people and dogs) want to play lol. so if there is people we know or noone around he gets let off.

Re: Do you let your dog off lead ?
kyes off the leed when it quite around the area where im going to walk her , i never let her walk off the leed next to roads as she has a strong chase instinct ,so a bag in the wind across a road is a death trap if she was off the leed.
shes great off the leed any other time exept when there are kid around to play with her, she dosent want to stop playing when there is so much attention being given to her from kids. she is realy good when playing with kids shes carfull and takes toys from them realy gently. its so sweet to watch .
