Crying Help!!

Post by Hilsie Wed Sep 14 2011, 21:31

Our puppy Millie just got her second injection and all of a sudden tonight her eyes have started to swell up. She was scratching at one side of her face but both eyes are swollen and red all around. She is going mad itching and she is crying every so often!! Does anyone know what I should do to calm her down or has anyone had the same problem? I will take her back to the vets if needed but is there anything I can do now as the vets won't be open! Thanks! P.s she has also started to shiver!!! Sad

Was she ok after the 1st vaccinations? If she was, I doubt that this is related to the 2nd lot, as they are basically the same things. She could have been stung by something, or be allergic to something.

I'd try half a piriton tablet if you have one. If you haven't, or if she's in distress, I'd get her to an emergency vet. I know they're expensive, but I wouldn't take too much of a chance with such a young pup.

Searched on the internet and apparently this does happen sometimes it is called 'Mild reactions'

http://www.pet-informed-veterinary-advice-online.com/vaccine-side-effects.html#reaction-six

Thanks stella and Caryll we will look after her and ring a vets if needed in the morning!

I'd still try the piriton if you have some. I notice that's what the article mentions (well, antihistamine).

Got some Piriton into her last night, washed her face with damp cloth a few times and by 2am the swelling had gone down quite a bit. Her face is back to normal this morning and although she seems a little sleepy today is pretty much back to her normal self.

Stupid of me really for the major panic as my son has peanut allergy and Millie had pretty much the same symptoms as he would have i.e. swollen eyes, lips etc and I know to treat that with Piriton immediately.

Thanks everyone for your concern.

The sleepiness will be the Piriton - it does make them drowsy, especially the pups.

Thank goodness the swelling went down, though. Even though you must be well clued up on sllergic reactions, it must still have been frighteneing!
