10 Months old and trying to live with a Cat
Some help would be most appreciated. My10mth pup Holly and myself have had to move back to my parents home.
Big problem is my mum has a 9 year old cat. Holly go's nut's screamming and barking , whenever Gizmo is in view.
I'am not sure how to get them to live long with each other. We always keep them apart one will be upstairs and the other down. But its not a easy thing to keep doing. I keep saying that we should let them sort it out, but I don't know if holly will hurt gizmo or the other way around. any ideas would be helpful.

oooh, not sure about letting them sort it out, one could get pretty hurt, unless you try muzzled sessions and try it that way, let em' get used to each other and then if it works out you can remove the muzzle
i have never owned a dog with a cat at the same time im afraid im no use .. but im sure someone will be along at some point to help

I had a cat with my English Bulldog. She would chase him around everywhere but would never do any real harm to him because she was very good natured. The cat was declawed so no worries there either. They ended up getting along but it took awhile.

I haven't had any problems with Saxon. I just told (tell) him "No" whenever he tries to chase them and he stops. I don't have any further advice, unfortunately! That's what has worked for me!

Is your pup 10months or 8 weeks? your avatar information and what you wrote are two very different things.
If your pup is 10months a muzzle may be needed a cage one where he can still be fed treats, and make sure she is used to the muzzle and comfortable with it! i.e doesn't try taking it off etc
An important thing to do is to satify curiousity, allow your pup to smell a blanket and do the same to the cat, swap over their blankets for a few nights.
One night when all is calm, go and fetch the cat have it in your arms, remain nice and calm and allow your dog to sniff it, it only need to sniff nothing else at all(no nudging/pawing and watch body language of both of them), have a sit down on the settee or something, the cat on your lap, its important not to let the cat scratch the pup either otherwise it would be a bad memory, if the pup reacts don't leave or remove the cat, just tell the pup to get off the settee with a firm no or another command like lay down, rewards the pup and cat with a piece of chicken something they both like to keep them both calm and happy, once all is calm again remove the cat. repeat this for a few days until you do not get a bad reaction.
(if the cat reacts badly take him away give him a few minutes and try again)
now when it comes to the cat being on the floor its very different, have your pup on a leash and take him to the cat don't let him take you, you control the situation and you decide whether or not he going to meet the cat again repeat this for a few days.
Its teaching them both that this is the norm, its nothing to get excited about or aggressive about and behvaiour should be neuteral and calm.
I'v always had dogs/cats/rabbitts/ferrets/birds and rodents all under the same roof while growing up and even now when i am older, it can work it may take a while and they may never be cuddlying buddies but they can atleast react neuteral around each other, good luck.
One other things as you bring the cat in, if your pup reacts ignore him, carry on taking a seat, give a command like no or leave, wait until he is calm and invite him over for a sniff not face to face , distract the the cat with a treat while your pups sniffs the behind.

Re: 10 Months old and trying to live with a Cat
I did manage to get my greyhound to be cat tolerant, she was 9 yr when we had her and manage to live with 4 cats, it wasn't easy by a long shot, she was muzzled for a few weeks, treats played a big part in getting her not to chase them, at 1st she wasnt allowed to be left alone with them, but after a month or so she was left during the day with the her downstairs with a stair on the stairs and the cats had free roam of the house, so if anything happened the cats could get away from her. It got to a stage where the cats would sleep in her bed, lets just say she was not amused and would cry pitifully for me to evict them.
Good luck, it can be done, just time and patience and plenty of treats and praise on both sides. By the way the treats I used were her dry kibble, because I was giving them to her from hand she thought they were treats that she should only have very occasionally and not regular food, not a bright dog really lol

Holly is 10 months. The avatar info has not been updated. Thank you all for the advice, I will give it a go with the muzzle.MissRogue wrote:Is your pup 10months or 8 weeks? your avatar information and what you wrote are two very different things.
