I'm getting an adorable 8-week old pup in a couple weeks. I can't stop smiling I'm so excited. thumbs up I was thinking about switching my current boy over to Orjien Tundra food. What do you guys think about that food for the puppy? It says it's for all life stages but I've never had any of my dogs on Orjien and it been a long while since I've had a puppy so was curious as to what other staffie owners thought. Would it be better to start with the Orjien puppy food?

Also what treats do you guys suggest for a puppy? like for training?

Orijen's a good food, but here in the UK it's probably the most expensive & there are equally as good makes that are much cheaper.

What do you feed Ruben?

Treat-wise, anything high value (ie smelly!) and small so that you don't overfeed. In the past I've used cheese, hot dog sausages (both diced) and even lumps of kibble taken from the day's ration.

I would firstly ask what puppy is being fed at the moment as you will need to transition from this feed to your choice feed over a week or 2 to avoid upset tummies !

I definitely recommend the orijen puppy as the kibble is also smaller in size so better suited to pup.
At around 5 months old and during new feed order, I decided to give 50% orijen puppy and 50% orijen original. The ingredients and compositions are very close but original kibble is bigger in size and my Nifty is a feed gobbler Rolling Eyes

In terms of treats, I try to give priority to treats as natural as possible.
Commercial treats will be orijen dog treats, though probably a bit big for puppy. Have a pet shop here who do hypoallergenic small treats but you won’t find them where you are.
Kibble is good and as orijen isn’t too greasy in the hand (compared to lots of cheaper brands) you won't need to clean them every 5 minutes !
Cheese for us is a very high value treat so reserved for canine club activities and special occasions.

Ps. Don’t forget that for training, a treat can also be a favourite toy or a play session for good work Wink

I raw feed so no advice on the food front but as for treats, natures menu do the smelliest little chicken treats (they do beef & duck too but I just get chicken) even though they are small I can still get away with halving them too because of how strong they smell Laughing and they come in small resealable pouches so good to go in your pocket when you are outside with them Smile

The puppy is on blue buffalo puppy kibble currently. I was going to leave him on that for a month and then switch him over to some kind of Orjien dog food. I figured the move away from mom and siblings would be enough different until he gets settled in. I will start with the Orjien puppy, I didn't think of the kibble size, that's a great point. One day I would like to go to raw but I just haven't done enough research on it. I hear some amazing things about the raw diet.

Thank you guys for all your input, you've been a big help. =]

Just a side point, I’ve read some not very positive reviews on blue buffalo feeds claiming they lie about ingredients and contain toxic levels of lead ...

Yeah i'm personally not a fan of Blue anymore. I had my current boy on it for a short while. They had so many recalls I decided to switch him to something else. I've been pretty disappointed with them.

I think I'm going to try the orignal out instead of the Tundra. Its a little cheaper and I'm guessing just as good.

Are you considering the original for Ruben and/or Ryker ?

If it’s the “exotic” side of the Tundra you were interested in, there’s nothing stopping you adding extras to kibble base Wink

Orignal adult for Ruben and the puppy for Ryker. I don't know why I was stuck on the Tundra. It's more money and the original I'm sure is just as good as the Tundra. Giving Ruben something different once in awhile as a treat would be nice. He gets tired of most cookies pretty fast. Usually can't order them more than once.

Try egg or fish or a little meat mixed in with kibble from time to time.
There’s a thread here, mixing raw with kibble containing links along with suggestions.

Definitely add the occasional raw egg (including the shell!) or some tinned mackerel (either in oil or spring water - not brine), they'll help with joints, heart condition & a lovely shiny coat. Love Struck
