Very mouthy puppy Empty Very mouthy puppy

Post by Chaz4455 Wed May 24 2017, 21:02

my puppy is 10 weeks old and very mouthy at times, it's normally at the same time every night (about 8.30pm) she has a mad half hour biting and playing, I've tried the yelp and the games over but that just makes her worse. It's almost like if you tell her no she has a little temper tantrum. When she gets too rough I put her on the floor and ignore her till she calms down, she normally then takes her frustration out on her toys. I've also noticed when she plays with other dogs she tends to bite too hard at times. Some dogs will tell her off and others will just put up with it. How can I help her understand that she has to be more gentle with her mouth? I've always been a Labrador owner so not had this problem before. Thanks

Hi. We were black and blue from Gus when he was that age. It does get better eventually. I found the only thing that worked was replacing our hand/arm with a toy. When that didn't work we would walk away and let Gus calm down.

We also found Gus mouthing would get much worse if he was tired. Gus is fast asleep at 7pm could it be your puppy is tired at 8:30?

The advice James gives above is what I would have said, replace said arm, leg, torso with a toy so as to reinforce that toys are for chewing and not people. Also, ensure everyone in the home adheres to the same rule set.

It could well be that she gets over tired, she hasn't had a sleep since 5pm and has just crashed now (9.20pm). I will try to keep a toy on hand, she does go a bit over the top at times but with me it's always around 8.30 ish.

Hank is still like this now and I just do the replace with a toy or ignore him or get up and leave the room for 10 seconds if he bites too hard, I'm praying that this will all stop when he stops teething so I'm perservering thinking it isn't going to be forever.

Edit: I have noticed it gets worse at night too so I thought it could be a tired thing so I put him to bed and he goes straight over

All of a sudden you will realise that you haven't been bitten all day, then two days and so on. Gus will still mouth me sometimes but the difference is he knows full well he shouldn't be and stops.

This is nothing new, anyone who has owned a staffy pup will have gone through what what you are, just distract her with a toy or rope.I can promise you all the hard biting will stop once those baby teeth are replaced with the adult one's,our Tess was exactly the same, but after the 2nd teeth came through it changed. She still likes to mouth a bit now when playing but the pressure put wouldn't break an egg. When she gets over exited and mouths a little harder I tell her a very firm NO and she stops right away and replaces the bite with licks.I promise you it will stop,it's all part of teething, they can't help it.

A good way to soothe gums is by giving your pup frozen vegetables and an old teatowel to chew on.

We have a frozen tea towel for hank that really works, I can imagine how much it must soothe his gums when he bites into it Smile

Good advice already given, Staffies love to chew and a bit like you are finding out, my pup would go through stages throughout the day where he was more mouthy than others, normally when he was over tired.

Pups need lots of sleep, but unfortunately don't seem to realise this! Kongs have really helped us, in an evening when he started getting mouthy and hyper I would give him a frozen kong and pop him to bed, he would often fall asleep half way through it. Frozen kongs are great for relaxing them and helping to soothe their little gums. In the mornings I would measure out his food for the day, pop some of it in his kong, soak the kong in water and cap the end off with a tiny bit of peanut butter then freeze it so it's ready in the evening.

As already advised if he is mouthy during the day I would just grab a toy and put it in his mouth, took me a long time to find something that he really liked to play with (other than my hands/arms) but eventually settled on a rabbit skinned tug toy, he goes mad for it.

Benebones have been really good too, Hugo loves to chew them in the mornings and it's now part of his daily routine, laying on the sofa next to me whilst I have cup of tea and watch the news, ahhh peace (if only for half an hour!)

You've got great advice. My puppy Rebel is 14 weeks & still very mouthy. We just give him a toy, he is getting much more gentle with it lately. He broke skin a few weeks back

Thank you for all the advice I will try some of the suggestions. What about her biteing too hard on other dogs? She attaches herself to them and they do tell her off and she backs off but she doesn't seem to be getting the message?

She's still only young, dogs will keep telling her and she will get the message.

Rebel can still bite Saxon my jack Russell too hard at times. They do get it in the end. I let Saxon tell him off but have been teaching enough for when things get too wild

She will soon get the message from the other dogs so don't worry. They will put her in her place as Katy has to her younger friends Smile

Hades is 12 weeks and is the biggest biter I know.
The amount of scars I have is ridiculous.

I try the toy thing, and it works... Until he sees my arm or hand again.
Just keep giving her frozen carrots to chew on.

Gizmo had a crazy rampage every single day at about 9pm for weeks until we learned to put him to bed.

Whilst I agree with letting other dogs tell puppies off, please watch out and avoid elderly/injured dogs if you can. Especially at the moment when it's so hot.
