Crate training Empty Crate training

Post by I❤dogs Sun Feb 26 2017, 11:50

Sorry to do a new post so soon. I still have 6 weeks before my new puppy arrives but want to be really prepared. I've never used crate training before, I've just supervised puppies & spent my life racing outside lol. My Jack Russell is 6 next month but I did house train a dogue De Bordeaux puppy recently as her owner was having housing issues so she stayed with us for 6 weeks. I either watched her or had her on a long leash. Saxon, my jrt has an open wardrobe he uses as a den when he wants peace from the kitten. He sleeps in bed with me at night. I'm thinking crate would be a good idea for our new pup, id leave the door open so he can use it I'd he wants, give treats etc in there . As crate training is new for me I thought I'd get some opinions from experienced owners. Thanks you

Also I'm a light sleeper so wanted puppy in bed with us at night too, then I'll wake when he does for a pee. Does that sound ok. I rarely get in a deep sleep so don't think rolling on him is a risk at all

Sleeping on the bed is fine, loads let theirs share but be aware that the little bundle of fur will evolve into an 18kg+ bed taking over Staffy Laughing

Crate training is a good idea, somewhere safe for him to retire to and also a safe haven should you have workmen in the house or something. Ensure its his space with perhaps a chance very over the top to make it a nice cave like space.
