Arrgghhh

Sunday just gone we had to take Flo out a little earlier than usual as we had a family thing on so took a stroll over her BIG park. As we were walking through the wooded area I could see some people chatting and a rather large golden Staffy..... you know whats coming next

As we got nearer I distracted Flo with her Stix as usual but couldn't see the other Staffy anywhere until I heard it crashing through the bushes and attack Flo straight at the back of her neck !!! She responded and snapped back but immediately refocused on her Stix and I yelled at the other Staffy so as to distract it. The owners clearly heard me and called it and to be fair, it did return. I'm just thankful that the other Staffy had a muzzle on else Flo would have been at the vets for sure, her neck was soaking wet.

I'm usually good at avoiding potential issues but as I couldn't see the Staffy due to the bushes I was caught out. The other owners were apologetic, however, I can't but feel that if you know your dog reacts to other dogs (hence the muzzle) then why wasn't it at least on a long lead. It's this sort of thing that gives our Staffies a bad reputation sadly.

Thank goodness for muzzle and thank goodness for Stix!

And I agree, what a shame to let the dog get into that situation when it would appear it's a known problem.

Thank god it had a muzzle on, poor Flo It does make me cross when they think as it has a muzzle on it can still run loose!! We have a DA staffie at the end of our lane who when out is muzzled but off lead He terrifies Katy as he always chases her even though she is a lot bigger than him she would rather run Glad Flo is ok Ian

Im glad Flo is 'ok'! Well done on being vigilant or even tho a surprise I'm sure this could have turned out far worse. Thank god for the muzzle!!

The odd thing is, as soon as the other dog had gone Flo carried on as though nothing had happened, no hackles up no tail down just happy go lucky Squirrel watching

poor Flo - so glad it didn't phase her - I am always worried when I see another staffy off its lead running for buddy - so far all have been friendly but I cant help thinking that one day we will meet one that isn't, if you know your dog is not friendly then keep it on a lead.... amazes me why people don't consider it:(

Poor Flo. That's a terrible thing to happen! It's always a shock when something happens so quickly!! Luckily the dog was muzzled but I agree you would think they would have a long line at least. Did the other owners say anything to you?

The owners are responsible enough to muzzle the dog. Too little too late, had the dog been properly socialised and trained as a pup, these situations could be avoided. Obviously I don't know the circumstances, I.e it could have been a rescue dog for example. Like the other guys said, if it's muzzled it should be on a lead at all times whilst walking.

I did sigh abit when I read this because too often staffy 's get bad press. I have never owned a staffy until now, Bowie is only 12 weeks old and has responded incredibly well to basic training. Including not biting me and my 4 year old son! Sit, lie down, come here and leave! I always thought staffy's would be a nightmare to train, because of the bad stuff we have all read about but I am amazed at how quick they catch on! Just as quick as Labrador dogs I have had in the past!

Keep spreading the truth about these wonderful dogs peeps!!!!

Poor Flo! Good that there was a muzzle, but as people have said, shame it doesn't help the reputation of the Staff family. Perhaps it was a rescue / youngster / in training or rehab?  I'm trying to give them the benefit, but I agree with the Arrgghh!

Funny enough my Flo is really scared by collies and will give them a wide berth. I hope Herbie wasn't too badly hurt!

After playing nicely for a bit, the collie just went straight for his face, unprovoked and bit through his eyelid! Healed OK, left a scar and the eye drops made green stuff come out of his nose, but he survived and doesn't seem bothered by collies now so hopefully he won't bear a grudge! He was very lucky.

Funny how some dogs take against other breeds or colours, don't know if they are born with it or it's past experience?!

Yeah I must admit it would be nice to know why Flo dislikes them so much.

I think Staffies tend to get into scrapes simply due to their boisterous, adventurousness and natural tendency to stick their noses where they shouldn't

Misty sees something in her way, be it a tree, wall, house etc and just assumes if she walks or runs into it then it will move out of her way!! Her nickname is 'our beautiful little oaf'

That's so weird, not long after reading this post, my Bowie was attacked by a collie!!!! It must be the staffy's arch enemy breed!

Oh No! Poor little man, looks sore, give him hugs from me and Herbie. I do think collies are a bit bonkers, and I know dogs do take against some breeds, so who knows! And he's only a baby, bless!

mia got attacked by 2 collies the growl she gave ive never heard a growl like it in my life im no a fan of collies or maybe its the owners and the way they are trained

Yeah I was abit worried about him not socialising properly after the incident! He seems undeterred so far, he was playing nicely with a French bulldog and a enormous Rottweiler at the park this evening!

I have always liked collies, but it's abit strange how quite a few on here have had run ins with them!

I think in my girls case it's the way they lay down and stalk/herd, it really unnerves her also not sure if she ever had a run in before she came to live with us
