Post by Nina1 Wed Aug 10 2016, 19:17

Hi I am new to this website. I have a 10 year old Staffy Gus who we have had since he was 8 weeks and we adore him. On Sunday we brought home a 8 week old Staffy.  Can you have 2 male staffs together as I am worried? Gus growls at Elvis to let him know leave me alone and Elvis does leave him. I have separated them at night but it's hard work. Can 2 male staffs get on??? Everyone says give it 2 weeks and they will bond by then but I am worried. I have Been doing all the right things making a fuss of Gus first and feeding Him and treating him first etc.  any advice as I am worried about when Elvis gets older. I am seriously thinking of rehoming Elvis.

Hi from me & Katy, I'm not a 2 dog family but have been told it's best to have one of each sex. Just keep a close eye on them & make sure Gus can get some time away from young Elvis. Someone with more experience will be along soon. But I can say with experience we love pics here Big Grin

welcome from me and mia try interacting the 2 dogs together as much as possible , gus will likely feel left out now you have a younger dog do all training sessions together use seperate feeding bowls and toys. id take your younger dog to puppy training classes this way he knows how to behave around other dogs . a dog particularly a puppy takes a while to settle also your other dog after all this time and theres another dog in the house Smile

Thank you for your reply. I am keeping a close eye I have only had Elvis since Sunday so early days. My dog is quite pocessive of his tennis balls so I have to be really careful Elvis don't go up to him or he really snarls I don't think he will go for him but I'm not taking any chances.

Trying to post photos but no idea how....Help

It may well sort itself out. When we got Millie, Nola was a right grump for a good couple of weeks but now they get on brilliantly.

I think you do need to allow Gus to tell Elvis what he's not happy with, it's all part of him teaching the boundaries that Elvis needs to learn for them to get on. At this age, Elvis should learn quickly that balls are not for him and he should learn to leave them alone. If you don't let Gus teach Elvis that now, you're much more likely to have a spat later on. You clearly don't want Elvis to get hurt but it's very rare that an older dog will actually injure a puppy, it's usually carefully judged to get the message across without going too far.

I've not had two male staffs together but have had 2 (or even 3) male dogs together without a problem. Is Gus neutered? That may make a difference, especially as Elvis grows up.

So... keep an eye but while you are around let them get on with it to a large extent.

Since we brought him home we have let Gus get on with it if he growls at him we ignore them no one in the family interferes. Elvis soon submits or runs off. Our Gussy has never touched any animal or human he's too soft but they are dogs and I will not leave them alone together if we are out. We had our first full night sleep last night which is brilliant.
Gus has not been neutered but I am gettin Elvis done as I think this will help.

Feels good to speak to other Staffy owners thank you for all your advice I will post loads of pics of them both as soon as I can.

Ahh congrats on your puppy. I would get Elvis neutered as soon as the vets say is allowed, this way his hormones won't kick in and he won't be a threat to Gus as he hits his teens. They say to leave til about a year but in your case I would do ASAP.

I had a very dominant bully with my staff and if there were certain toys that caused any particular problem I would remove them. I am sure all will be well as you sound like you are aware of possible problems and as long as Elvis learns to respect Gus (and you are right to let him give him a good telling off) then all should be good.

I also found bones were a big no no, but you will figure it out as you go along. Good luck and try and relax and enjoy it. xx

Elvis will be neutered as soon as he can will,be speaking to vet next week. The last couple of days have been so much better and my Gussy is tolerating him more and tells him off if he's had enough and Elvis just walks away. I have now got them sitting together for treats and always give Gussy his first. I have taken tennis balls away as we had toy wars and give to gussy when Elvis is asleep. Elvis now goes through the night which is brilliant and I'm more relaxed. Wow this was harder than I remembered but I wouldn't part with Elvis now. Photos will be posted very soon.

Thank you for all your help

Hi! As long as little pup knows to leave big boy alone when told, you will be fine. Two bitches are more likely to fight than two dogs.
