Sofaaaa Empty Sofaaaa

Post by MatthewJP90 Wed Mar 30 2016, 16:04

Hi all.

Just wondering where you all stand with letting your dogs on the sofa?

Frankies previous owner let him on the sofa and he slept on the sofa at night. So as you can imagine Frankie tries to jump up on ours on a regular basis. Only problem is we've only had the settee since November last year and it was really expensive.

Our sofa is leather and I'm worried that he might scratch or even rip it with his claws. But yet I'm a sucker for those puppy eyes and feel quite mean telling him no Sad  hahaha

Cheers Matty

Misty is on our sofa all the time. She even sleeps in our bed. I've even been known to sit on the floor so she can have more room on the sofa! It's leather and she doesn't mark it all, the sofa is very old though!

See I don't want to say it's ok and let him start getting up in case he marks it or worse then have to stop him again. I don't want him getting mixed messages from us..

Hi Matty, I believe Frankie hasn't been with you very long and he will be adjusting to his new home and surroundings which may be a bit overwhelming for him. It really is up to you but if you don't want him on your sofa then you have to be firm and say no.
Personally, I would cover the sofa with a nice soft sofa throw or another solution would be to buy a second hand sofa or chair to call his own. You can pick them up quite reasonable from second hand shops/auction rooms etc.

I started with that rule, however, Staffy cuddles won me over very quickly. We have a leather sofa too and simply put a couple of thin blankets on it for her to lay on.

Let us know how long you last Laughing

dnt do now what you will have 12-15 years down the line start positive training and tasty treats with the floor where necessary and a firm no before he attempts to jump on the sofa do this every time and he will soon get the message consistency is the key a firm voice without shouting a firm level even tone .

We just have 2nd hand sofas!

Seriously, though, I think you'll find this hard to break as he already knows in his mind that it's ok. I'd go down the throw route too.

Agree with above, understand it is a new sofa , cover it and don't miss out on the Staffy cuddles, Blue has been up on our leather sofa since 8 weeks old and he has not done any damage, he also sleeps in our bed! Hope you come to the best solution for you and your family.

I've always had second hand sofas also.. Honestly even I stopped her getting up while I'm at home she would still sleep on the sofa when I'm at work! When she was younger she did dig a massive hole in my leather sofa, but there was a storm whilst I was at work so I think that's possibly why. We cover our new sofa with multiple blankets and she hasn't ever done any damage to that one Smile

Frankie is part of your family and would love cuddles with you, Blue is as we speak on sofa on his back legs in air sleeping while we stroke him for comfort and human touch which he craves as do all Staffys.

This is an interesting one for me! Got my boy at 8wks and let him on the lounges from day dot, i LOVE the cuddles!!! Hes 2.5yrs now, 6mths ago we moved & got leather lounges and hubby said no to him being on them (booooo!! Haha) so we dont let him on it at all, he was confused at the start but soon cottoned on and knows hes not allowed on them. I WANT him on them but the key is for everyone to be consistent so if you decide no then everyone must be the same, no secret cuddles when kids are in bed! Laughing I let him sleep on my bed tho to make sure i get my cuddles!!! Laughing
