Luna doesn't want to walk

Luna is 3 months old now and i took her outside for walks probably 10 times so far.

The problem is that she does not want to walk...i'm wondering if she is afraid or cold. It's -11 degrees C outside (wet, snowy, icy) and i was wondering if this is too cold for a puppy her age? She has a jacket which covers her back and chest but doesn't seem to help.

I've tried using a leash and also letting her without the leash. If i leave her off leash in a garden she would start moving around and playing, peeing, pooing etc. If i leave her off leash outside the garden and ask her to follow me she just sits down and stays there no matter what i do. Sometimes she would try to follow other people that are passing by. On a leash i just end up dragging her after me...she follows through the building until we get outside or back in the house, but outside she does not want to go anywhere. I've tried using treats and toys but it did not work.

So would this be due to the cold outside and should i wait for spring? Or do i just have to do something to teach her to walk outside even on this weather?

Aww....my pup is just the same. She hates walking in the wet and cold and rolls her eyes when she sees the harness come out.

I wouldn't worry too much...I have found that as Betty got older (she's nine months now) she was more amenable to wet walks.

Don't push Luna too much, rather find some indoor games to play or teaching her a new trick. Training tires Betty out just as well as walks!

The first thing you need to do is stop dragging her. She'll soon pick up the association between the lead and something unpleasant and you could end up with a bigger problem.

It might just be a lack of confidence, possibly with the cold. I think I'd start by not thinking of walks but just of getting her outside happily. Has she got a favourite toy? If so, keep that now for special occasions. Teach her to chase you to get it, in the garden first, so that you are not putting pressure on her to play, you are not feeling frustrated that she won't walk, you're just playing chase me chase me.

When she's got the idea that this is a chasing toy, then go to a park or something. If you have warm waterproof trousers, put them on because ideally it'd be good to now go down on your knees and play bow with her. Let her know that you're playing, and then play chase me with her toy. Throw it, let her chase it and then run off so she will follow you (don't go too far!). Work in a safe area, off lead, so there is no chance of a pull on the lead. We want to make this all her choice.

What should then happen is that she becomes more relaxed being outside and also used to following you in the game. You can then start to incorporate just walking along as part of the game, and from then you start to walk normally.
