Buddy has always been allowed on the sofa and up until now - (He is Five Months) he knows that if his blanket is not on it he doesn't get up and waits for the blanket to be put on, and to be told he can get up , but over the weekend this behaviour has changed.
He is obviously getting bigger and can get on the sofa himself, but was still waiting to be told he could get on it . the only time he got on the sofa without being told was when he was having the odd Zoomie moment, but that was just running onto it and off again But over the weekend he has started running and launching himself at the sofa and whoever is sitting on it. I managed to catch him mid air Saturday before he landed on my daughter who was on her laptop with the cat next to her he would have hurt one of them broke the laptop or worse hurt himself -I thought it may have been jealousy induced by the cat,but on Sunday we had friends round and he did the same thing to them ,only I wasn't quick enough and he really winded our friend ended up hitting her full in the face from a run up of about 15 feet .. he weighs 12 kg so is not a lightweight at that kind of speed - I ended up having to crate him to calm him down something I don't like doing, but he just kept coming back and jumping on them -I tried "Enough", Leave it and the no commands all of which he knows and is really good at obeying normally! to no avail

Any advice on what to do I cant have him jumping on people or the furniture in this way - he gets down when you tell him but just does it again and again - like he has found a new game - I know he will try his luck and I get the pinching things from the bin or the table and the odd chewing issue but I need to break this jumping habit for sure he is a heavy little thing and will only get heavier!!

On Saturday in all the rain he decided he was going to get on the chair in the garden and get on the glass table and started slipping every where I managed with a treat to get him back on the chair and off but he did it every time he went outside was worried he would fall and hurt himself he - tried it with the coffee table in the house too - things he has never bothered with before .
suggestions please ....

Marley does this when we have people around too, gets so excited he dives all over the settee and who ever is on it. I've tried enough, down sit but non of it works so I just let him say hello then put him in the kitchen to calm down. I've told everyone who comes in, ( if he jumps up on them) to ignore him but that doesn't work either. Marley only does it when someone comes into my house tho always listens when it's just us lyk. Getting heavy now ain't they!

they are getting heavy - Marley looks taller than Buddy - Buddy is squat little thing but solid.. he is normally good with other people but this weekend he has had a complete change of character - I even wrote a list of what he ate in case there was something there =- it was like he had eaten a tube of blue smarties! thanks for the link - this seems to be predominantly if he jumps up - and he doesn't when we are standing he is fine and if someone comes in the room he just runs around them never jumps and if he did we would use these techniques- have used them before with my greyhound who used to kangaroo - he only jumps when they sit down and then its always from a distance, its hard to then get hold of him to get him to sit or get down as he is wriggling and nipping and getting more and more worked up - you cant turn away because he is jumping on you ..I am scared he will end up hurting someone leading to all sorts of issues because he is a staffy . If I know people are coming I can put him on a lead until he has greeted them, but am concerned at some point during the visit he will launch himself at them - don't want to have to crate him every time as it will mean he never mixes , on Saturday he was just out in the garden playing and then just ran in and jumped into the air at us caught us by surprise as we had been with him all day no idea why he did it ...

You need to look at what he's getting from this, i.e. it's a game and he gets your attention. The reaction he gets, even if it's 'oof, Buddy, get off' is enough for him to think it's worth doing again.

Not only do you need to make sure he doesn't get the reaction he wants, to be really effective you need to give him the opposite. Stand up and walk away. Not a word, not even a look, just walk away. He's driven you away. Give him a minute to think about it, then (when he's off the sofa or whatever) go and sit back down, call him over and invite him up quietly. Give him a calm fuss and a cuddle, then invite him back off. In other words, he gets the attention he wants for being quite.

For the time being, I'd have him on the lead if there is anyone else in the house. Not only do you not want to risk them getting hurt by a clunking great staffie head in the nose or something, it's also always going to be more exciting just for the fact of there being a visitor. When he's calm, you can walk him over to say hello so that the same rule applies, quitely does it and you get a fuss.

I hope that works!

hi liz - I will definitely be using a lead for visitors - I have a training lead at the front and back doors - front for visitors and one when he charges into the garden and tries to take the cat out ( non aggressive ) - I am getting him to sit and putting the lead on to give my old (15yrs) cat chance to shuffle out of harms way ..when sitting down it is sometimes hard to get up and walk away like when I had the lap top on my lap and he just took off from the middle of the room- I think I may change the room around as the sofa is directly opposite the patio doors may swap it for the armchairs smaller target to aim for and easier to get hold of him on a chair , I initially moved them as he used to run behind the chairs and there are wires there but I think he is too big to get behind now just one adventure after another Big Grin
