Innoculations
Hi everybody,
It has been a good few years since i last had a pup, as my last two dogs were both rescue`s, and fully inoculated when we got them.
So, though i could just Google my question, i find it much nicer on this fantastic forum, so here it is...
I pick Maya up on the 9th july, and she will be 8 weeks young, so what are the stages of inoculation ? Can she have her first jab straight away ? and if that is the case, when will her second jab be ?
Thanks in advance
Terry.

Re: Innoculations
Usually the breeders get the first jabs at 8 weeks. If not get her booked in for the day you pick her up. The second jab is usually two weeks later and then it's up to two weeks after that before you can take her out properly. However, you can start to socialise her with trusted dogs that are up to date with their jabs about a week after Maya's first jab.

Great Thanks Pete The Breeder did offer to have the jabs done at first, but she is starting to let the pups go at 7 weeks. When she offered me that option i totally refused, as i know 8 weeks minimum is best. And apart from that we will be in Majorca
So yes, i will make a vets appointment for when i pick Maya up. I can`t believe how excited i am.

Re: Innoculations
We did Marleys first jabs too at 8 weeks most vets usually offer a puppy pack where you can get them chipped for free next jab is at 12 weeks then, all I'll say is after her first one be careful Marley caught the parvo virus shortly after his first one because they ain't fully protected till the 2nd one. We've never had a dog before so don't know how he caught it but it can b as simple as you bringing in on your shoes Marley has to have the booster jab nw at 16 weeks just to be safe

I had to wait four weeks in-between Buddy's injections and he was 10 weeks when I got his - I also got him Micro chipped at the second one as he was a little bigger and had more loose flesh to get it in- can be a bit awkward when their skin is tight - she is lovely .. Buddy doesn't have that sweet look of a staffy - he has more the I am full of trouble look! and boy is he trouble at times...

Ok, Thanks for the heads up Emma. I suppose they can still catch viruses no matter how careful we are. Glad Marley got over it with no issues.

Thanks Carol, we get back from Spain next Tuesday, so i will phone the Vet to get Maya booked in.( I pick maya up on the Thursday ) I may as well get one of them puppy packs, as Emma suggested. I will have to inquire if it works out cheaper than doing everything individually. Yes they all have their own personalities for sure

Re: Innoculations
most vets do puppy packages I got one for Buddy - covered his jabs first three months flea and wormer, discount off micro chipping and also a discount off of having him castrated when he is old enough- well worth a look ...

Re: Innoculations
I just phoned the vets to register Maya, and they do a good offer on the packages. £50.00 for all the injections, flea and worm treatment for 3 months, 4 weeks insurance, and free micro chipping.
I thought that was really good, so i tried to book Maya in as soon as i pick her up, but i was advised by the receptionist to wait for a week, just in case Maya comes home with any infections etc. She says that is what they advise all new puppies, though i haven`t come across it before. Never mind, it will be less stressful for Maya, if she has been with us for a week before getting jabbed and poked and prodded by the vet.

That's what I had for Marley and the four week free pet insurance is what saved his life in the end! Covered absolutely everything I was so lucky! Very expensive illness to treat!

Yes it can pay off sometimes having insurance Emma, Free or not it is something i have never bothered with before, but i may be tempted to get a policy for Maya, with her being so young.

It doesn`t bear thinking about Emma Do you mind if i ask what sort of policy you have for Marley, and how much it costs. Not that i`m worried about the money side of things, but i would just like a rough idea of what i should be paying.
Thanks.

Well my vet gave me four weeks free with petplan, I got told by many people they are the best for claiming money back because some people have trouble with others so thought I'd stay with them, if u renew with them u then get another month free I pay£25 a month and that covers everything so I can claim up to £4000 a year hopefully won't have to but it's there ain't it

Re: Innoculations
hi -the chipping doesn't hurt as such but he is likely to squeal a bit- my vet took Buddy into another room so a nurse could hold him so she only had to try the once to get it in place as they know how to hold them securely without hurting them.- don't get upset if Marley howls a bit he will soon be bouncing around ..best to get him done especially as you letting him off the lead now

Thanks Emma we had a great time. Mad hot in majorca at the moment, and got a bit uncomfortable at times, but a few nice cold ones worked a treat.
Glad to see Marley didn`t have too much of a hard time at the vets.

Aww i would highly recommend insuring yoir dog from the beginning . Glad marley is recovering emma i think the dogs benefit the younger they visit the vet the better i would say to get the dog used to the vet give plenty treats and if possible pass the vet on your walk so when visiting the dog associates the vet with good things and not something to be scared off. As there are other animals there its great socialisation too

Is Marley fully inoculated now meaning you can walk him etc ? The only reason i`m not too sure is because your profile is still showing Marley as 8 weeks old.

Yes Crystal that is my intention. I will probably just continue with the policy after the 4 free weeks. It makes total sense for the peace of mind it gives, and at just over a pound a day it`s well worth it.

*Maya Update*
Hi all, i took Emma`s advice and got a puppy pack for £50.00, and today it was Maya`s first visit for her jab and microchip. I have to say she was brilliant, and didn`t flinch with the injection
Then the vet got the microchip ready, and said she will probably squeal with this one as it is a bigger needle ! How wrong she was, Maya didn`t even blink. I Thought she was dead brave, and she has had loads of Treats and cuddles since. The vet also said it was ok for Maya to go in our garden now to start toilet training So maybe a little less mess in the house now.

Really impressed with her Emma. since that first jab which was the 13th, she is almost fully toilet trained now, with just the odd accident in the house when i don`t catch her in time.

Brilliant Emma Maya only cries when she is hungry or tired at the minute, it`s worse when she is tired though as she starts the nipping of toes, chewing etc. Only lasts for 5/10 minutes though, then she is snoring her little head off.

Re: Innoculations
Well Maya went for her booster today and was very brave again ! The vet weighed her and she has put 2 kilo`s on since her last visit a fortnight ago. So she now weighs a healthy 6.2 kilo`s.
I asked the vet if that was a good weight and she totally agreed, just adding, to make sure i don`t let her get overweight.
Another week, and i can start turning that little jelly belly into a lean one with all the exercise she will get.
