Histiocytoma Empty Histiocytoma

Post by Laura_sa Tue Jun 23 2015, 19:47

So our little Eco has to have a histiocytoma surgically removed tomorrow. Although a benign growth which usually goes away, hers has gotten bigger and bigger Sad

Bit nervous and hoping the excision area won't be too bad. Poor little thing. She will also have to wear the cone of Shame.

Has anyone had any experience with this sort of thing?

No experience sorry, poor Eco I hope all goes well it will be aftercare which will be difficult. I hate the cones I invested in a rubber ring collar for Vin they are so much more comfy and enables them to see where they are going. They do them online Big Grin

Yes. She can come home on the same day at least. Will see if they have a rubber ring that the vet. Sigh. I have a crate from when she was smaller, wondering whether to bring it out again to keep her safe from herself.

im sure the vet operating with make the incision as small as possible and there must be other exciting ways rather than the cone of shame for eco to wear ?. wish u a full and speedy recovery.

Oh bless her. Where abouts is the growth on her body? Bug has had 3 lumps removed in the past few years - the incisions have been fairly large each time, but this was due to the fact that they were concerned that they may be cancerous and they wanted to remove all of the surrounding tissue to be sure.

No matter where the incision is - she will be on restricted exercise for the first 10 days +. Each time Bug has been a little drowsy for a few hours post op, and then wanted to be running around like usual, acting like nothing had happened! I use a cone if I can't be with Bug, but don't keep it on when she's in eye line unless she's really trying to get at her stitches; however, those stitches could come out in seconds if you're not watching, so keep a very close eye. I would offer bland food for the first meal or two, chicken and rice maybe. Some vets will offer a course of antibiotics to prevent infection - some may just offer a few days of pain relief. Mental stimulation is most important whilst exercise is limited, interactive feeding with kongs etc will help too. Most importantly, follow your vets advice, try not to worry, and enjoy the sleeps snugs!

The lump is on her neck/chin, she was recently spayed and was fine with the stitches, didn't fuss them at all, but she has been scratching at the lump. It's about 15mm in diameter, so is quite large.

Thanks all. She just managed to scratch it badly this evening so feel very sure removal is the best option. Will keep you posted on the recovery. Love her to bits and surprised how anxious I am even though I know it's not a major op! First time puppy mommy Smile

Once the lumps removed hopefully the itch will go as well anytime mia itches her lumps and bumps i say loudly and sternly leave it . She even looks at me before she even attempts to do it so she knows shes doing wrong Laughing

She's home. Unfortunately with the placement of the growth, she has to wear a cone. Vet said everything went well so hopefully she'll be back to her normal self in no time. The vet isn't concerned about the growth, but I am getting it tested for my own peace of mind.

I am sure we can walk her in a few days with the cone on.

Today she's still drugged up and sleeping, tomorrow is going to be interesting. Poor little thing.

Glad to hear it all went well.

If it's any consolation, once they've got used to wearing the cone they cope very well. After a while I think it's us who feel worse about it than they do!

Happy to report the incision has healed up nicely. Although on day 7 we took the cone off. Even thought we were watching her the whole time, she managed to hook one of the stitches. Thankfully it had healed sufficiently so didn't have to have another stitch put in.

Next time, hopefully not for a very long time, won't risk it.
