since Marleys been allowed out we're starting to let him in the garden to go toilet, but the prob I have is that my grass area has had to b blocked off because there's grass seed down, so Marley has to go on the concrete but the prob I have is as soon as he goes out (I go with him) he frantically runs around to eat stones? I do my best to get them out but that's all he seems to want to do? Any1 got any advice on how to stop this? I've swept the stones away but I have a pebble area so bit stuck really

Have you tried distracting him by playing with him? He might need just a few minutes of fun when he's first let out, so if you provide that fun he'll hopefully leave the stones alone.

Yes tried rolling a ball to him yesterday to play with, he did for a little bit but then bk to trying to eat stones, it's all he seems to want to do, then he ends up not going to the toilet and doing it when he comes bk in. I put him on his lead yesterday and told him no every time he picked a stone up, told him drop and sometimes he did but when's he's off the lead he's hard to catch to take them out of his mouth

Marley will go through stages when outside, its natural behaviour for a puppy -some days I let Buddy out and he goes toilet and comes straight back in and others - he pulls my plant tubs over, eats stones digs holes you name it - sometimes I think he thinks his name is NO I say it so many times ..if you know he wants the toilet let him out give him five minutes and if he hasn't been take him back in again - he may end up going inside but eventually he will go when you take him out and then praise him and make a huge fuss and he will realise that he is there first to go toilet and then to play.. if its easier keep him on a lead .. a long training lead is good and just a slight tug and no when he goes to pick up a stone will help-saves you trying to catch him- I cant catch Buddy, especially when he has something he shouldn't - he will get there ..took Buddy about a week to get the idea -now I have to convince him to go when out on a walk -there is always something new to teach them...

Before Marley fell ill he would go outside to go to the toilet but now all he wants to do is eat stones, he had a wee yesterday when out on a walk, but on his second walk didn't but I knw its just time. Think I'll try more play outside and give him more toys to distract him. It's just going to be hard work arm because he can't go on the grass area! I will keep trying and try your advice thank you Smile

let us know how you get on- Buddy loves going for a walk but holds himself until we get back home and goes in the garden or he goes before we go out ..so doesn't need to go when walking ..- we have a timing issue at the minute but as he gets older I hope it will improve..-good luck with Marley - he soooo cute by the way !

Theia was bad for picking up the gravel in our garden too. We just had to steer her away from them but then it just seemed to stop. The longer line sounds like something you could try.

Tried my best to tell him no and drop but he wouldn't listen so brought him inside to calm down

Suki was the same way. All we did was constantly monitor and correct her and she outgrew it

Molly did exactly the same when we first started letting her out. We have an area of shingle which she would have a wee in and she would always pick up a tiny stone and roll it round in her mouth. I worried like hell that she would swallow it or damage her tiny teeth but she never did. At 5 months old she now picks up the occasional stone but very rarely, I think it was just a stage she went through. a bit like her duck poo eating phase and her digging up the garden phase.

Bo constantly picked up stones when he was a puppy, I had to follow him round the garden stooped over like an ogre, plucking bits of rock out of his mouth. He didn't tend to swallow them unless he was excited, but luckily he never got one stuck. He grew out of it in a few months although he still picks up random stuff when he's being playful, and tears chunks from any plant or bush within reach.
