Issues when playing/excited
Hello!!!
I hope someone will be able to shine some light on this little issue I'm having with Quinn.
She's absolutely fantastic around people, jumping is a little problem, but that's getting worked on, she is an angel when it comes to tricks, learns really quickly, tends to not bite or nibble on hands etc. So, she's perfect 99% of the time around people.
The issue is that my parents have two dogs, so when I visit and stay, I take Quinn, but she is awful with them. It's not her fault, like, she's not being aggressive, but when they play she just bites down SO HARD on their legs! It's horrible because she's just playing but nothing is stopping her, she just gets so over excited and that's when she starts going for their legs/ears/skin and she just hangs on so tight and it really hurts my parents dogs.
We've tried putting her in time outs, saying no, she just waddles over, looks sorry, and then two minutes later she's back doing it again. She doesn't play in ANY other way, even when she's playing with toys she's attacking them full on.
I'm just worried because my parents can't relax when Quinn is around because they're always having to watch their dogs in case they get hurt.
She also starts nipping when she's really excited, so we can't play with her for too long because she'll start jumping at our faces trying to nip.
My mum says it's a "terrier problem" but I don't want Quinn to be like this, it's a shame because she's so perfect when she's not over excited!

Re: Issues when playing/excited
She's 6 months old and still learning what's allowed and what's really not acceptable. I'm not a lot of use to you as I adopted my girl when she was older but I'm sure as Quinn gets older she will calm down.
Hopefully others will be along tomorrow to offer more practical advice

Re: Issues when playing/excited
I can't give any advice on the playing with your parents dogs as any dogs Auri has played with soon put her in her place if she got too excited and we've not had to intervene. She is a bit younger than your baby though.
Auri does get really excited when we play and has tried jumping up to nip at arms and faces..not aggressively, she is obviously trying to treat us like other puppies. When she was younger 8-10 weeks we would tell her 'no' while gently pushing her way and distracting her with her kong bear. If that didn't work it was game over and time for her to chill out. We still distract with kong bear but have changed gentle push and ' no' to 'sit'. She does still get over excited and nippy but it's not as often and not as hard and she gets better all the time. ( Auri is motivated by food so getting her to sit and then reward is effective now she's a little older).
This is whats working for us and I think consistency is the key. Same reaction every time and they get the message. As Ian said they are still learning what is and isn't ok at this age and it takes time . I'm sure you will get there

Re: Issues when playing/excited
I agree that she will settle. We taught our pup with the word nicely, start with giving her a treat saying it and only give the treat when she is gentle. Progress this to when you are playing with her and also with all dogs. We're always saying nicely when we meet any dogs.
What breed of dogs do your parents have? And what ages are they? Usually adult dogs are quite good at putting a pup of any breed in their place.

Re: Issues when playing/excited
Just keep socialising her with older balanced dogs. Peppa was a rude pup till she played rough with old cocker spaniel he didn't hurt her just kept rolling her on her back and she got the message. It's trial and error
But I always tell her " gently" if she's getting too rough as they all do and it works. 6 months is still very young.

Re: Issues when playing/excited
My boy is the same with his brother, when they're together all they do is bite each other, and they hurt each other as I hear them yelping.
What I do though is everytime one of them goes to bite even if it's playful i'll say no, quite loudly and firm, if they carry on and not listen i'll put one on each side and not let them get closer then let them go again, if they lick each other or not bite each other i'll say good boys and reward them for behaving nicely together.
Still something that we working on though, but around other dogs at the park he doesn't do it which was my main concern, just don't give up and be consistent with your method if it's not working keep trying even if you stay there for an hour saying no, they're puppies and they trying to punch their boundaries to see what they can get away with.

Re: Issues when playing/excited
I would just keep socializing her with older more balanced dogs if possible. To be honest they do play on the rough side. Suki is extremely well socialized but she still snarls, growls and on grabs onto other dogs necks. She can also turn down the play to play with pugs or other small dogs. It's really about socialization and learning to understand body language.
Also if you or your parents are nervous around heer when she plays she will pick up on that and be nervous as well.

Re: Issues when playing/excited
With the over excitement of playing with other dogs. When she starts to get a little over the top, just say something like enough and then lead her away to another room for a couple of minutes. Leave her by herself to calm down, and when she has calmed bring her back in. It's a pain, but you will have to do it every time she gets over the top until she learns to play more gently.
We do this with Bane and my parents staff, and after about 3 or 4 times he gets the idea and just gives up. It's an ongoing training process but as long as you are consistent she will learn quickly.
It will take us some time as Bane only meets my parents dog a few times a year (Domino is a leg biter and humper and Bane is an ear nipper and snappy crocodile) You are not alone
