Help with several Behavioral Problems
Hey Guys,
I’ve got a few questions on how to correct some behavioural problems with my 11 week old staffy. Now none of these are major problems, but I want to make sure I nip it in the bud early so its not a problem later. He’s a really good puppy, who has good days and bad. Yesterday was his first day with no accidents. I’ve enrolled in puppy classes but its so booked up around here I cant get in until 5 June. So I want to sort some things out between now and then.
So far I’ve taught him Sit, drop and shake and am aiming to teach him come and stay this week. He’s learnt the commands so far fairly well and is at the point where he will do the 3 commands he knows without treats or toys being present. He can’t do them when there is a minor distraction though. If there is anything else going on he drowns me out.
Although I do have a doggie door (which he uses well and will take himself to the toilet if he can get into the garage) I would like to teach him soon how to ask to go to the toilet if he can’t get to the doggie door. Is there any advice?
Unfortunately, he’s also a biter and its one of the ways we think he shows affection and plays- its his favourite activity-even over walking or chasing me around the yard. I’m trying to stop him doing this and its progressing slowly. What’s the best advice on weening this out? Sometimes I give him a toy and he’s satisfied. Other times if he’s got my hand hard I have to try push under his tongue saying No until he whimpers a little and lets go, but he tries again 3 seconds later.
He’s also starting to jump on the couch (successfully). We take him off and say no but he tries immediately to get back up. Usually its just to sit in our lap, not to be on the couch. I let him sit on my lap up there sometimes, but will have to stop this as I understand its sending mixed signals. I guess that’s my fault.
I’ve also found he’s not responding well to the word no. Some-times he does, but other times I can have the deepest nastiest tone with the no and it won’t even phase him. Is there a way to teach him what no means? I thought a spray bottle may work?
Id appreciate any help.

Re: Help with several Behavioral Problems
Hi and welcome, This is all normal puppy behaviour those links should help, I would advise not to use 'no' too much because it invalidates it, try teaching other command such as leave, wait etc and save no for very naughty or dangerous behaviour

Bless him. Sounds like he's doing great. Well done both of you... The biting phase will pass with lots of consistency... As for the sofa... It will be owned before you know it
