please help!
hi im new and in desperate need of help. i bought a staffy pup 2 weeks ago and got told she was pedigree but the breeder had ran out of papers and would pass them on when done. a few days ago i picked up the papers but didnt read them til i got home. to my horror my pup was only 6wks old when i got her and she was born from a father/daughter litter (that was the only sign of inbreeding in papers). she was the smallest pup and i got told the runt of the litter. took her to the vet and a blood test showed slight abnormality to the urea (lost consentration by then) which might indicate liver problems. anyway i have 3 small children and worried she might become vicious due to inbreeding. should i be so conerned or will she still be a good dog for my kids. (she is great with them now, doesnt nip or anything). ive tried to contact breeder but he wont answer phone or anythiing now.
please help i so love her and dont wanna get rid of her because she might be dangerous.

Re: please help!
Hi & welcome to the forum!
Inbreeding won't make your pup vicious, so don't worry about that! It's the way she's brought up from now on that will make her the adult she will become. Be fair but firm, kind and consistant and she'll be fine.
I would be more concerned about her health. What has the vet said about the future? Will you need more tests?
As you have the address of the breeders, I would write to them (recorded post - keep a copy of the letter for your records) detailing the fact that you were told she was 8 weeks when in fact she was only 6 weeks & that she may have liver problems. Tell them that you are waiting for further tests.
If it turns out that your pup does have liver problems you will have to make some important decisions. Will you still keep her? Don't forget that the vets bills will probably be heavy. Will you demand your money back from the breeder?
Of course, it may turn out that there's nothing wrong at all, and that the tests she's already had looked abnormal because she is so young!
In the meantime, just enjoy her - she'll be the best companion your kids have ever had & will love you far more than you can ever love her! That's what they're like!

Re: please help!
Inbreeding has nothing to with her maturing to be vicious.
The breeder is totally irrisponsible doing that What papers do you have kc reg ones?
Take a look at miss rogues little girl she was from a close mating and shes lovely so keep calm

Re: please help!
By the way - I would check with the Kennel Club that the papers are genuine. the only reason I say that is that the Kennel Club will not register pups from a close mating, ie father/daughter, mother/son, brother/sister.
If she is, indeed from a father/daughter mating, then there's a good chance that she isn't actually registered & you would be able to sue the breeder for fraud.

Re: please help!
thank you all so much for putting my mind at rest she had some bloods sent away for further testing to see whats wrong. vet gave worse scenario (dont they always lol) that an operation wouldnt help or be too expensive and that they could only give meds to manage the condition if that doesnt work then its bascally the end. if she needs meds thats fine, we all love her to bits and would rather give her a chance then having her put to sleep and wondering 'what if?' but she also said it could be cus she is so young. we bought some lactol to help her.
she isnt kc reg, neither was her mum or dad/grandad even tho his parents were. all i have is a pedigree paper with 5 gens on it. i only have the kc numbers for the sires parents.

Re: please help!
If the breeder told you she was 'pedigree' then she was basically saying that she was registered with the Kennel Club. If that's the case then she has fraudulently deceived you, and has therefore broken the law!
I would still contact the kennel club & ask them if a litter was registered, giving the name of the breeder, names of the parents & the date of birth of the pups. Again, keep a copy of the letter. If you choose to sue the breeders you will need the kennel club's reply.
Whatever you decide to do, I'm sure your pup will be gorgeous & much loved - enjoy her puppy antics & settle down to some fun times!
If you have any problems/questions, please ask away & we'll help if we can.

Re: please help!
Unfortunatly these people are all too common anything to make money they have no regard to the poor pups they are selling on thats why Id always recomend going to a reputable kennel and doing your homework first.
If the kc dogs you have kennel name on are from a reputable one they would be interested to know what is happening with there dogs and you never know they may even have endorsments and thats why the pups have never been registered

Re: please help!
Sorry Caryll I mean the grandparents that are registered and have kc reg numbers. If from a good kennel may have endorced the pups and therefore would be interested to know why they have been bred and have legality to the litter. May be a reason why they havent been registered after or some nob has just mated with anything not bothered about registered or not . hope you understand now im confusing myself nowCaryll wrote:If she is from a father/daughter mating, the pups can't be registered.

Re: please help!
think the breeder might have just bred for the sake of pups or could have been a mistake (sire got caught by accident) she never said. pup is fine, eating well, plays and goes loo ok so if something was really wrong then she wouldnt be like that i guess. thank you for all ur help, first time ive had a puppy so dont know what to expect lol

Re: please help!
Unfortunatly thats how some people sell pups im afraid. Another to watch for is copying pictures from top show dogs and advertising them as the pups parents its really sad at what lenths some will go to just to make money Your girl looks a beautiful little puppy think on a positive note and remember if there is ever a next time you wont be so nieve im sorry for what has happened but you have the most important thing and thats your new baby

Re: please help!
im not bothered if shes kc reg or not, im not going to have her to breed, well 1 litter then have her neutered. have contacted the breeder to say she cant advertise them as pedigree even if they are all full staffys. hopefully she wont take it the wrong way i just dont want her to get into trouble if someone who knows what they are on about gets a pup. x

Re: please help!
Well I think you should make sure thats shes healthy before you even think about letting her have a litter and then have her health checked for genetic faults, really think about the breeding as what you have been through youve been lied to by the breeder to enable the pups to be sold. Your girl will need at least 3 seasons before she is mature enough to have a litter and then its selling unregistered pups would you be abe to cope with your time and financially. Most people think its easy money but lots of things can go wrong and you could be out of pocket .
Dont mean to go on but really consider all the pros and cons you have a long time to consider the future

Re: please help!
You have no idea what genetic problems she could have as a result of her inbreeding. Do not breed her!
