Flakey skin.
Hi All ,
Just a quickie , Roxi has been scratching at her neck since we got her , i thought she was just trying to get her collar off , on further inspection we have seen that she has slighty flakey skin high up on her back , is there anything i can buy or do to sort this ? , thanks.

Re: Flakey skin.
Seems like an irritation to something maybe the collar, as it is only on her neck. What type of collar have you got?
Half a piriton tablet may help ease the itching.

You can buy a shampoo for sensitive skin or an oat shampoo, you can also give coconut oil just a teaspoon.
What food is Roxi currently being fed?

Re: Flakey skin.
Hi neil, does Roxi wear her collar all the time? Organic coconut oil is good for dry skin

Re: Flakey skin.
Thanks for the fast replies , she is being fed pet mince mixed with oats which the breeder gave me to start her off ... the collar is one we got off the internet , to be honest i donk think its anything to do with the collar ( im not sure what you mean by what sort though :-)
Her collar is on her for maybe an hour then we take it off , just to get her used to it slowly.

Re: Flakey skin.
How many weeks is Roxi now? Is she about 10 weeks? It could be the oats neil? Are you thinking of feeding her kibble?

Re: Flakey skin.
Hi everyone, Sasha had terrible dry skin when she was smaller especially after we bathed her. I received some excellent advice from the forum and we now give sasha a teaspoon of salmon oil each day and rub natural organic coconut oil into her coat at least once a week and strictly no baths unless she is really rank which has only happened once when she rolled in poo when having a run in our local park. Since taking this advice her flaky/itchy skin has cleared up and she has the shinest coat ever (people are always stopping us commenting on how good condition she is in)

Re: Flakey skin.
She is 7 weeks now Darcy , i was planning on keeping her in the mince and introduce chicken wings as per the advice of the breeder , Both Roxi's mum and dad are in this diet and they look great.
Thats great advice Jan , i will look into doing that straight away :-)

Re: Flakey skin.
She's only 7 weeks now? So you got her when she was 6 weeks? That's bad! Why on earth did the breeder let her go so young?
Ah well, what's done is done, but you may find she'll be harder to teach bite inhibition to.
As already said, a teaspoon of salmon oil a day will help, and rubbing a little coconut oil into her skin will also ease the itching & condition the coat.

Re: Flakey skin.
Thanks for the advice , the reason he takes them out at 6 weeks is because he says that where young children are involved they don't learn the rough and tumble as much as if they go the full 8 weeks ? , we are currently training her not to bite and to be honest she seems to be a very quick learner :-)

Re: Flakey skin.
Hmmmm they should be with their parents until at least 8 weeks which teaches them bite inhibition because mum will tell them of if they you too far, and so will their siblings. But she with you now and sounds like she's doing well, I use Paul Mitchell oatmeal shampoo which is gentle on Darcy's skin.

Re: Flakey skin.
They actually learn more in the last 2 weeks than at any other time! When they play With their siblings they will bite, and if they bite too hard their siblings (and/or mum) will yelp and either snap at them, or move away & refuse to play. They soon learn that they have to keep the really rough stuff to themselves or they can't join in! Better that they learn from their siblings than from your toddler!Neil. wrote:Thanks for the advice , the reason he takes them out at 6 weeks is because he says that where young children are involved they don't learn the rough and tumble as much as if they go the full 8 weeks ?
It sounds like the breeder was more keen to avoid the expense of feeding/worming & so got the pups off their hands two weeks too early.
