A one time breeding.
Hey people, aside from my last thread. My females next season is coming up quite soon and I'm torn between breeding her or just buying a male pup. I know she will give a nice litter, I'd really like to keep a male and it would be nice having one from her. But on the other hand I know the vets advise you not to and I heard 50% of staffy births are c-sections..
Is there any high risks of breeding? I'm being careful of who to sell the pups to but any help use can give me to make sure my bitch is safe?

Re: A one time breeding.
Don't do it!
For a start you would have to have your girl dna tested for the genetic problems in staffords and get her tested for phpv, plus you would need to make sure any stud dog has the same tests. Then you have the expense of any complications, the worming of mum & pups, microchipping & first vaccinations (although not all breeders do this). Then you have to be prepared to take back any pup if the new owner can't, for any reason, keep them - no matter how old that dog is or how many behavioural problems it has picked up along the way!
I don't know where you got the info that 50% of Stafford births are C-section. Although I don't have figures I doubt that's true. Staffords tend to be quite easy birthers.
However, there are so many staffords in rescue that the forum would always recommend that you leave the breeding to the professionals!

cant add anything to what caryll has said
but i have heard there are more staffords having problems with birth as larger dogs are being used to breed from with more standard size bitches and the larger pups are cousing problems resulting in c sections but i dont think it would be 50% but deff truth in what you have heard

Any seasoned breeder will tell you that there are always risks with breeding - both to the bitch herself, and the pups. Not all pups born make it to 8 weeks old, and some bitches get eclampsia shortly after birth which can be dangerous if it isn't spotted quickly enough.ClydeFrog420 wrote:

Yeah I understand, think I may just buy a male pup I'm better off just keeping my bitch in good health.

Much better and much cheaper! Let the other people go through all the problems/hassle/worry of breeding!

good choice infact maybe the better choice all round as some might say parents and children dont always get along as well as unrelated dogsClydeFrog420 wrote:Yeah I understand, think I may just buy a male pup :)I'm better off just keeping my bitch in good health.

Very wise decision, don't forget to have your bitch spayed before you get the male though

Re: A one time breeding.
I've been thinking for a while to get a male staff but I also love akitas, I use to own one but needed to give her away due to complications :(Do you think my female staff and a male akita can live well together? (I will be buying the akita young.)
It will have to be a long hard think between a male Staffy or a male Akita I'm leaning towards a Staff, I wonder how the playing will be with my staff and an akita in my apartment :/ I heard Akitas can do well with apartments aslong as they get enough exercise, which is fine for me because I walk everywhere lol

Re: A one time breeding.
I assume your complications are no longer an issue , as obviously any risk of not being able to keep another dog means you shouldn't think about it in the first place
The pairing sounds ok as any dog capable of a bit of rough and tumble and of sturdy build will be suited to a staff , no good getting a chiwoowoo that will get beat up every 10 mins . No experience of living in an apartment though , imagine it takes a bit of special thought and patience when you can't just get up in the middle of the night and throw them out the back door into the garden . Toilet training etc must be a nightmare

Toilet training in a flat/apartment isn't that difficult (been there, done that!) it just takes a bit more thought & time.
