Re introduce pup to parents and broter?
Hi all, not been on for a while, coopers doing great and trainin going well. I'm going to have a look around and catch up on everyone
I have the option of taking cooper for a play session with his mum, dad and little brother. Cooper is great when he meets other dogs, for the first wee while but after a minute or so he gets a bit excited. Jumps up and gives great big cuddles and if they have long ears he likes to have a nip.
All the dogs around us are tiny, shitzhus etc. so he is just so much rougher but all he wants to do is play.
We keep in touch with his mum and dads owner, swapping pics and keeping them up to date on coopers progress etc.
So is this a good idea? I have no clue and don't want to take him into a situation where he will be upset. His mum and dad are very well socialised and see other pups from the litter.
Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks
Lesley

You can try them but be warned that siblings and parents generally do not get along and the owner of the other dogs will be finding that out the hard way.

Re: Re introduce pup to parents and broter?
Ah, lovely Cooper!
The only similar experience I have is that Kuchar's litter sister lives not so far away from us and they occasionally meet up and get along fine. This started at about 4 or 5 months old and we all said "oh, they remember each other" but I'm not entirely sure that was true, it could have just been boisterous pup meets boisterous pup!
On the other hand, Kuchar also met his litter brother at about 10 months of age. Kuchar was all for playing (he loves ALL dogs) but litter brother had a go at him (and meant it).
All in all I'd say don't place too much reliance on "family bonds" (you are Cooper's family now) and introduce them to each other calmly and carefully as you would with any other dog - in a neutral place (not in each other's homes or gardens).

Re: Re introduce pup to parents and broter?
It depends on how much interaction they have had in the past , if its been from day 1 generally works out ok but if longer every chance of a big fall out . Tommy met his sister about 10 months ago as their first meeting since seaparation and they were not so happy , met her again 1 month ago and had to drage them both apart , then met his sister from an earlier litter last week and not comfortable

Re: Re introduce pup to parents and broter?
Weve had a few reunions and everything went okay. Bit of rough play but nothing nasty.
At first one they were only around 18 weeks old and the dad took an intrest. Next one neither parents took much intrest. In fact the dad stayed away at the other end of the park wanting nothing to do with them.

Re: Re introduce pup to parents and broter?
It's sad isn't it, but I really do believe that once dogs leave the nest they forget their dog family very quickly (not at once, hence the crying at night) but very soon, once they know who their new family is. And then their parents and siblings are just "other dogs" to them.

Re: Re introduce pup to parents and broter?
@Maria90 - thanks so much - I swoon every time I see him x
@Lynda - thats actually what I was hoping. You see Cooper is great with dogs but hasnt had a chance to play with someone bigger or equally as strong so he hasnt, in my opinion, learned his strength. He jumps up on smaller dogs and that can frighten them. I really just want him to have a rough and tumble play where they he can see that he isnt always "boss" you know? I don't want him to get hurt - but is he nips a bigger dogs ear, then chances are they will nip back - and no one has done that with him so he doesnt know how sore it is (thats my thoughts anyway).
So we were thinking that we know his previous owner, we know their dogs, they are great and wondered if it could do any harm to let them have a play. Its not so much about re-introducing, any staffy would do lol its just we know them and would feel comfortable if cooper was there, ie we could trust them to know their own dogs and signs etc.
Perhaps "re-introduce" was the wrong term to use for what I am trying to achieve.
If anyone has any other ideas for Cooper not jumping up on dogs and giving them great big cuddles, and nipping their ears (not all the time, just the spaniels really) then Id love to hear from you :0
(oh and we do the 2 second introduction when out on walks but im talking about the other instances when youre actually standing talking to someone or they say "let them play" etc )
Speak soon

Re: Re introduce pup to parents and broter?
Why not give it a try - not the whole "family bunch" altogether at once, that might be a bit overwhelming for Cooper - but gradually, one to one on neutral ground just like you would with any other dog.

Re: Re introduce pup to parents and broter?
I think I know what you mean. Despite meeting lots of dogs on our park walk laska has only just found her perfect match in a loverly little girl that is her age but quite a bit smaller but knows how to play rough. I can see a definate change in her deminer when she is around her new friend. She loves playing with the boys but just seems more content with her new friend and although they still play rough it is different. With marley he always has riley a bull mastiff cross staff 's neck to hang off or his bro loki who we meet quite a bit and they have been okay mostley except at around ten months where they would try and rip chunks out of each other but have been fine since
