Pigs ears???

Hi i gave my 18 week old pup pigs ear today to chew on as a treat. I was a little unsure if he was too young, but as there was nothing on the packet to advise me not too i gave him it. Less that 10 mins later it was GONE!!!
I thought it was a chew that would at least last the day. lol
Does anyone know if this will digest ok?

The 1st and last time I gave Hollie a pigs ear she had really bad runs...then the vet told me it's best to wait until she's at least 12 months old, could be just my Hollie though 'cos it's never affected any of my other dogs

I would say wait also because of the strain on there baby teeth and the new ones growing. I guess it'll digest ok so don't worry there, unless it causes an upset like Debbie said.

I dont personally like them but I cant see them doing much harm as a treat occasionally

Thanx for your replys, i dont think i will be giving him another on any time soon. can anyone suggest any good chews? im trying to encourage him to chew his rubber ring, but hes having non of it lol

Put a little peanutbutter on it i bet you he like`s it

If you go to pets at home or Pet City etc, you'll find loads of puppy chew toys, specially made for teething pups, Hollie has a few that she still chews and she's 7 months

@danny, he does like them he ate the whole thing in under 10 mins lol

Sounds like we're in the same situation.............My Roxy (currently 17wks) is the same. She really needs something to chew that is also satisfying and tasty. Does'nt seem interested in spending a great amount of time chewing on a piece of rope or plastic but ya' can't really blame her for that
Don't get me wrong...she will chew on her toys briefly and loves to fetch them , but not for any real length of time

I might have to keep a close eye on this topic to see what others reccomend and suggest.

billy's farts stink when he has had pigs ears, so they are now banned. I give him a frozen carrot to chew or a frozen bone, lot's of mess thought from a carrot

I give frozen carrots or bananas when they are teething, but they can get messy! They much prefer to chew on something tasty, rawhide can be good for puppies this age because they cant actually break it down enough to choke on it like my girls do (they try to swallow them whole, and pigs ears come to think of it)!

Does anyone still give there dogs bones from the butchers? would i cook it 1st?

Give bones raw, no need for cooking.

Milly used to love her bones from the butchers but she cannot have any for 8 weeks

Let me first say your Clyde is a real little sweetie pie !!!
When pups are teething you can put their toys in the freezer for a bit and it is nice and cool and soothing on their gums.

The softer bones are fine for a pup that hasn't got its adult teeth yet, but don't give the marrow bones until teething is finished.

And NEVER cook bones - it makes them brittle.

I give my dogs pigs ears now and again just for a treat trouble with them they pong a bit im suprised they eat them

WE used to give pig ears as well but they disappeared so quickly Toys left in the freezer espically a Kong filled with a treat seemed to work best for teething.

i was really surprised at how they get through a chew no matter what it is in no time at all at such a young age. seems they arent as sensative and usless as we thought

MY PUPPY IS NINE WEEKS OLD. MY VETS SUGGESTED PIGS EARS FOR HIM FOR TEETHING. LIKE YOUR PUP HE DEMOLISHES THEM QUICKLY. MY SON GAVE HIM THREE EARS OVER FOUR DAYS. MY POOR PUP HAS AN UPSET TUMMY. I AM KEEPING A CLOSE EYE OVER NIGHT IF HE ISN'T BETTER IN THE MORNING MY VET WILL BE SEEING HIM. I THINK PIGS EARS ARE GREAT IN SMALL DOSES. BUT TOO MUCH IS NEVED :(R GOO

Deffinatly too many pigs ears for a 9wk old puppy, i wouldnt even feed an adult so many haha it deffo leads to upset tums .. i dont see why your vet advised pigs ears for a pup so young :S if im not wrong (dont quote me lol) but at 9wks he wont be teething yet) and if he is you could use items such as:

teething ring/Kong pop it in the freezer to become cold to numb the gums
Carrots - you can stick those in the freezer for a few also
pet stores have lots of chewing toys for teething pups and also teething gel to sooth sore gums

I dont feed my two pigs ears because i always end up tipping em up and pulling it out of there throat because they eat like pigs!! lol.
They have Biscuits and occasionally will have a hide bone while been watched! lol

Yeah we feed ours Pigs ears and tripe sticks as treats to chew on and nither of them last long. Rawhide works well as a longer term chew, but you obviously need to keep an eye on them when they are chewing any of these just to make sure they dont end up choking on it.

I wouldn't give such a young pup pigs ears at all, to be honest! They are likely to try swallowing quite large pieces & could easily choke. At 9 weeks I doubt that your pup is teething yet anyway!
