Rawhides etc?
Whenever I go into pet shops I see these huge ranges of bones and raw hides etc but they all say from 4 months plus so we are limited for cooper who is 13 weeks.
Can anyone suggest what he CAN get at this age? We have the usual chicken flavoured bone and he loves his kong but I want a bit of variety for him.
Thanks
Lesley

Re: Rawhides etc?
I've not had a young pup so I'm not sure, it's probably because you have to wait until they loose their baby teeth?
A lot of people on here use stag bars but you probably have to wait with those too?
I'm sure someone who knows will be along shortly with some advise

Re: Rawhides etc?
I never give either rawhide or the bones you buy in the pet shops!
Rawhide swells in the stomach & if they swallow a largeish piece it could cause a blockage. It's also treated with chemicals to strip the hair from the hide & those chemicals are often still present.
The bones in pet shops are all cooked, and cooked bones are dangerous.
I'd give a stag bar or maybe freeze some carrots for him to crunch up.

Thanks
I saw the stag things too, so much choice!!! I wasn't aware of that about rawhides, so glad I asked now!
So the stag things would be ok?
Off to pop a carrot in the freezer

Re: Rawhides etc?
Stag bars are fine. Some dogs get a bit too obsessed with them, but you could always limit the time he has with it if there's a problem. They're naturally shed antlers as well, not from culled deer. Very humane!

Thanks I'm trying to remember if I put as much thought into food for the kids when they were babies lol! Choice of bed, toys, food, routine, I feel obsessed!!!!

Re: Rawhides etc?
Stag bars are great, frozen carrots are also good (especially when they're teething as the cold soothes their sore gums), bully sticks, kong stuffed with peanut butter and some kibble and then frozen is also good and they have to work at it for awhile to get everything out. Always supervise when you give your pup anything just to be safe!

As far as I know raw hide is bleached, it can have traces of chemical left in it, it can also be a chocking hazard.

Re: Rawhides etc?
I gave wrigley pigs ears from a young age, practically as soon as I got him (I'd only let him have a bit of a chew to start with, seemed to keep him happy if he was feeling a bit lost or unsettled). I know they are a bit fatty but growing pups should be able to handle it. He loves them but they are treats only, a few a month max. He doesn't bother with the rawhide bone, carries it around but doesn't chew it.

Re: Rawhides etc?
Would always go for the stag bar over anything else for a chew, Rocky loves his and has one in his Christmas stocking each year now

Re: Rawhides etc?
I had to google stag bar...literally a piece of antler! Doubt they are available in Australia or I'd buy one for Wrig to try. He'll just have to survive on the lamb leg bones and shanks.

Re: Rawhides etc?
Jax (15 weeks) goes nuts for antlers! In Canada, lots of pet shops sell elk antlers specifically. I like the fact that they don't splinter, are completely natural, and they last FOREVER.

Re: Rawhides etc?
Chiquito has an antler (stagbar) but is only allowed to have it when I am there .. I treat it the same way I would a bone as that is what an antler is really
I do not do any raw hides/bought chews etc, however Chiquito loves frozen carrots, frozen bananas and frozen kongs. He also likes natural pigs ears, chickens feet and raw bones to chew on

Re: Rawhides etc?
Interesting. So they are. Might double check the local petshop now (but really, I wonder does he need yet another bone? He already gets so many raw lamb bones that he buries them, presumably to "age" them as they do make a return appearance occasionally.

Lana loves bulls pizzles, got her some extra large ones and they take ages for her to chew so last a long time.

Antlers are shed annually and are more akin to hair rather than bone, hence the reason they won't splinter, but I know what you mean, supervision is always recommended especially with a puppy.
Never tried him on frozen banana, must try that.
