How to examine a dog?
I was sitting on the sofa, Lola beside me. Then all of a sudden out of the blue she yelped as if she'd been hurt, she was holdong her back leg up a bit. I jumped out my skin and comforted her, she wasn't asleep, so it wasn't a dream. She then went into the hall and sat on the mat where she won't move from. She doesn't seem to be limping, but when I tried to examine her leg she went for me, so soemthing must be hurting her, but i cannot tell what as she won't let me touch her leg. Any ideas?

Cramp? I'd gently try to entice her with some treats & see if she's still limping.

I never thought of cramp. She is cowering from me now as if I did it to her, daft dog lol, just took her out in the garden and she seems fine now. But came back in and she's still refusing to move off the mat. Tried and few treats and she just goes back to the mat. I think I'll just leave her there until she's ready to come back in her own time.
Dogs are so weird at times haha

Re: How to examine a dog?
Caryll I need your expert advice again.
I'm not sure it was cramp because this morning she wouldn't eat her food and her stomach is really noisy. I thought I was going mad at first and was hearing things. But her stomach is really making weird noises.
She's been drinking and done both toilets and nowt wrong there.

Aw, poor Taz!
Louise, I think I'd try starving for 24 hours & gentle exercise. You could try some arrowroot to push through anything that shouldn't be there (grass, leaves etc). Is her stomach normal to feel? Not hard or bulging as though it's full up? Keep an eye on her, it's probably just 'one of those things'. If she goes off drinking, or drinks & can't keep it down then I'd see a vet.

Her stomach feels fine. Where would I get arrowroot from?
Thanks for the advice ><

Re: How to examine a dog?
The supermarket will sell it - probably under Home Baking, or wherever they sell flour etc.
Just put about 4 teaspoons of it with a teaspoon of honey in a glass & mix with cold water (about 150mls). Put in a saucepan & heat, stirring all the time until it thickens. Allow to cool. It should look like a lump of yucky gooey gel!

Re: How to examine a dog?
It tastes of absolutely nothing! But also, if a dog has the runs or a dogy tum, they may need the energy boost that honey gives. We akll know how low you feel when your stomach is bad.

Re: How to examine a dog?
Well I bought some honey, but do you think I could get arrowroot from anywhere. But glad to report her tummy isn't talking today and she has eaten her new puppy beta for large dogs and no problems. So maybe it was just something she picked up outside that got stuck. I may order some arrowroot online in case it happens again.

Re: How to examine a dog?
The big supermarkets really ought to sell it - it's used to thicken sauces, mainly sweet sauces for puddings etc.

Yay I found some and for any one else needing it, you can get it at Morrisons for £1.09

Re: How to examine a dog?
I've always got some in the cupboard because Dempsey is a complete bu**er for eating things he shouldn't, and it seems to ease out whatever he ate!

Re: How to examine a dog?
Just had to do the mix for Lola and she loved, so much so, she is still chasing the bowl round the kitchen, bless her.
She isn't eating her breajfast at all, and just nibbling her tea, then was sick this morning, only a bit and had more poo's in quick succession this morning whilst out. so hope this will clear her out from whatever is inside.

She seems to be great in herself, was normal on her walk, and is drinking.
She's asleep right now but I will keep an eye on it.

Re: How to examine a dog?
Have you changed her food at all?
It could be the change in the weather, of course, and if that's the case she'll settle soon enough.

Re: How to examine a dog?
I did get her a bag of the same make but for big breed puppies the kibbles were just bigger, but they only did one flavour, so just put her back on to the normal puppy one of the same make. I did mix the two.
But she does eat all sorts when were out, especially rabbit poo.
And the cats always get at people's rubbish bags and rip them open and leave chicken carcuss's all over the place and she does sometimes grab the odd bone, which I do know makes her sick, as I did try her myself on chicken wings, got a whole bag full and froze them, only to find they just don't suit her and make her sick.

Re: How to examine a dog?
I can sympathise there - Dempsey can't eat chicken either. Take care with cooked chicken bones, though, they can be very dangerous.

Well I now have to put the lead on in the house before we go to the car as she just know's where to head for.

Re: How to examine a dog?
Could Lola catch Parvo even though she has had all injections?
She's not well at all, well I say not well, she still isn't eating but is drinking and we went out this afternoon.
This morning she was sick, not food though. So this afternoon I gave her scrambles egg made with water and she was fine. We then went out for a walk, she ate rabbit poo again. We came back, she was ok for a while then through the egg and rabbit poo up. She then did the most rancid smelling poo I've ever smelt, it was kinda black and rancid.
The vet said just give her bland food, so was about to start boiling some chicken and rice when she through the egg up so I didn't bother.

Re: How to examine a dog?
I'd definatly stop her from eating the rabbitt feces cause quite often rabbits got a fair amount of disease in them. I wouldn't fed her chicken and rice because like you said she had some problems with chicken. You could try some turkey and rice, I wouldn't try beef as it is quite rich for their stomachs.

Re: How to examine a dog?
Did the vet give her anything?
To be honest, this seems to be going on a little too long - it might be worth another trip to the vets.

Re: How to examine a dog?
Well Lola's doing a lot better. She is keeping small amounts of her normal food down now and we are keeping away from the rabbit poo field, so, so far so good.
But then we went out tonght and someone decided it was a good idea to throw a tuna sandwich for her to eat, I mean are people stupid? I wasn't at all hapy to say the least and he was called stupid amongst other things.
But it made my blood boil, what with her recent bouts of not eating and throwing up and all and me trying so hard to keep her from eating anything she shouldn't, to the point of keeping her on leash for her own good.

I get really annoyed about that, too! In fact I get annoyed with my own family for doing it!
