Re: Do i need a behaviorist
With Rocky, when we first go outside to see him we are teaching him to sit and wait for us to interact with him instead of him jumping up and getting all excited, how old is your staffy? I would say lots of training, persistence and patience is the key, but everyone needs to enforce the training techniques you put forward, not just yourself, or else the dog will get confused about what is right and wrong! Loads of treats and praise when they are doing the right thing as well as this reinforces there good behaviour! All pups will bite and nip especially when excited, if it does get too much ignore the behaviour, turn around and do not continue the interaction until the pup has calmed down Stay positive, and good luck!

Re: Do i need a behaviorist
Why don't u point ur mum in our direction too. Maybe it will give her a little piece of mind and she can ask for advice on how she's feeling towards the puppy.

Re: Do i need a behaviorist
That's a good idea Matty
It really does just sound like normal boistrous puppy behaviour.
You could enroll on a puppy training class if there are some in your area? I know a lot of people on here, myself included have done classes.

Re: Do i need a behaviorist
What food are you giving your pup and what sort of exercise is she getting?
To me, it sounds like she's hyperactive and as your mum is very nervous of her it's making her worse!

Re: Do i need a behaviorist
I think it would be great to point your mom in our direction! All pups nip, at this age the explore with their mouths! They don't know that it is unacceptable behavior and you need to teach them! This will take time, patience, and consistency and will not happen over night! Does the pup have plenty of things to chew on? When she nips say no very firmly (dont yell) and redirect her to a toy. If she continues turn your back and ignore her or pick her up and place her in another room (puppy proof of course) for a few mins for a time out. You and anyone else in your household need to do this every single time! If you do she will quickly learn nipping = play/attention stops and she will improve! How much exercise does she get? What food do you feed her? How old is she?

Re: Do i need a behaviorist
Can only echo others, point mum in our direction and for now what are you doing to stop the unwanted behavior and is there more you can do?
You need the entire household on board when training, maybe your mum could do the feeding and try and build a bond Xx

Re: Do i need a behaviorist
Nothing abnormal about this behaviour other than pup being pup, Tommy was exactly the same , just lots of patience and training is the key , you have to show him its not acceptable

Re: Do i need a behaviorist
Agreed it's normal puppy behavior, you must be firm with him though, he has to know his boundaries and he is as puppy's do pushing them, i have learned by now owning a Staffy that they hate being told off, if i scold Duke he drops to the floor sighs and positively sulks he hates being told off in a stern voice, so there is your answer raise your voice at him let him know who is in charge .

I dunno what age your pup is but might want to up the 20misn walks a little. They work harder on the leash than free running.

Re: Do i need a behaviorist
Hiya,
The walks might be long enough, I am not so sure, they say 5 minutes for each month of age until 12 months or something like that, although for a puppy I would say it is better if they can run around and play with dogs rather than just walk on lead. Stella was wild as well when she was at that age. I was lucky she had loads of dogs around and they were playing a lot so then she was calmer with humans:-) But she could be a nightmare sometimes, the nipping and stuff. People have loads of good advice here so I just want to say Good Luck and don't lose hope. Patience is the thing which works. And try to stay calm so the dog does not pick up the tensions. Hard I know! But you will end up with an amazing wee dog you'll see:x

No, she's not yet 4 months, so 20 mins on lead is about right.
However, you could try to introduce a little off lead play in the middle if you can.

Try investing in a long training lead (about 30 or 50 feet long) you can get them quite cheaply off ebay. Let the lead trail, but keep the end within reach. That way she can feel that she's still on the lead, but it will give her a little more freedom to tire her out!
Also, if she starts to get hyped up, introduce a little training - just simple things like sit & come. That'll help to tire her brain out as well.
Always take plenty of treats with you on walks, as these can do wonders for grabbing a dog's attention away from your ankles!

Re: Do i need a behaviorist
Im just having a rant really but it seriously annoys me how people dont wanna help u out but r quick to put u down!!!!!!! My eldest sister came up tonight and after a rough few days with my mum being very distant and not wanting to be around puppy (we had a big chat today to try and sort something out to make this a good time, iv got a training classes number through work thats starting soon) so anyway my sister had flip flops on and toes r defo a fave food for the diva dog lol but my sister just shouted at her which made the dog jump up and mouth her leg and she wouldnt listen wen i said tell her to sit, avert her attention. Its terrible so then we had dinner and i put her in crate woth her kong with some paste but once finished she whined which i ignore as i wont give her attention in tht situation, so what does my sister do....wind her up by makin the same noise!!!! ARGHHHHHHH!!!!! Im doin everything in my power to do right. I mean its so backward im the youngest n my 40 year old sis is like this. My bro also said hes not coming to ours anymore as we have a bitey staffy

Hey, mate, try not to stress too much. You'll have the last laugh when you present the doubters with a beautiful, friendly, well behaved dog in a few months.
You'll get there, and with your mum on board as well, she'll be fine!

Please trust me on this, Roxy is 18 weeks old now, from the day we got her she was a real nipper, relentless, she still play bites now but in 10 weeks we have seen such a massive improvement, the only way is up
