Post by JaggyWombat Tue Jul 02 2013, 00:04

After advice the other day i did some more research and searched around a few KC registered breeders and after a few sold out litters i found a lady who asked what i was after and knew local breeders well enough to recommend a breeder. Who has breeds the kinds of dogs i would like and has a litter due in the next few weeks. so they should be ready to leave mum mid september. giving me plenty of time to prepare, so thats what im asking for help with.

I'm looking for a kind of check-list i need for a puppy in particular. Ive got a Staffy currently put a puppy is a whole different ball game. so far my check list consists of.

-Make sure my dog is up to date with his jabs.

so im a fair bit off so any help would be lovley.

Puppy Checklist? Empty Re: Puppy Checklist?

What age is your staff?

My first port of call would always be that i have a healthy puppy. Check for all the tests required i.e. L2HGA, PHPV etc...Make sure the parents dont have these.

Secondly i would look at the nature of the mother, always ask to see her and see her interact with the puppy (a non-mother is not likely to be calm around the puppy) ask what food it is on, and ensure it is a good brand (bad breeders wont feed the likes of pedigree or bakers or wagg or bread and milk) and always feed the same brand no matter how bad, to your pup. If it is awwwwwwwful food, wean your pup off it over a week or two to save upset tummies. If you want to feed raw you can at this age, but again wean them on to it. ask to see proof of birth and never leave without ORIGINAL papers never accept a photo copy. Make sure the pup has the 1st injection and a microchip.

So now you have your pup, bring him/her home. Make sure you and whoever you live with agree on a set of rules (e.g. the puppy will live in the kitchen/bedroom, the puppy won't be allowed on the sofa, the puppy will only be allowed to pee in the garden)

Decide how you will toilet train, you can either train the puppy to go on paper at the door eventually it will go to the door and this will let you know it needs the toilet. Or start outside immediately and take the puppy out every 30mins/hour or after every meal and wait for it to do something. Lots of praise.

Worming is very important in puppies so make sure to worm your own dog before pup arrives and worm pup when you get it. i personally don't flea a dog unless i see fleas.
