Normally Bruno is a little star on walks an can be let of lead which we only do whilst in the empty field an down the country lanes, he normally doesn't go too far ahead and normally comes straight back when called!! Ohh no no tonight we took a different route tonight still down back lanes though half way round let him of lead along with one of the other dogs he was really good we passed a few fields with cows which he had a few stare offs with but would carry on walking then all of a sudden he darts into another field full of cows an started playing chicken with them he didn't bark but was running right upto them an generally being a pest, an he would not come back when called my heart was in my mouth thinking he was gonna get trampled or shot if the farmer was about eventually he did creep back when he thought he was gonna get a treat huh no chance he got straight back on the lead an had silent treatment all the way homebody he defo knew he had done wrong was giving me sheepish glances an when we got back he pinned me an licked me half to death, dunno what we're gonna do with him now the little mong Sad

Get like a 5m training lead and pretty much leave it trailing behind him, you do have to untangle it occasionally but if you see he is going to bolt, stamp on it and grab it before he gets away! Don't pull on it though if he hasn't bolted just stand on the end and try to let him make the right to carry on walking on his own, then treat him as soon as he breaks his stare and starts walking away, worth a try

Absolutely, but I'd go one step further - get a 50' lead so that he can still have a good old runaround, but you're in control all the time!

Thanks for the advice will try that next time! I really dunno what happened he's normally not bothered at all just walks on maybe its cause the OH wasn't with us he thought he'd try his luck maybe? Think I was shocked more than anythin! Don't think he was trying to be aggressive with them looked like he was trying to play more than anythin running up an then darting away like he does with the dogs sometimes in the garden but you could see the cows were getting agitated bloody stupid dog I dont want to s just glad he is okai an defo won't be letting him off lead again in a hurry!

Tommy is a little bugger and mostly always on his 50' line these days. He tried to man up against a herd of cows the other week too

I'd go with the training line. They have their bad moments, particularly as they get a bit older. Loki's recall used to be perfect, but when he got to six months old, it started to disappear. Nowadays it's hit and miss, so I always keep him on the long line. If his recall is usually fine then it was probably just the temptation of playing with the cows, so try him on a long line near the cows again, but keep the line within reach at all times, and then call him back to you. If he doesn't come back on the first shout, reel him in like a little fishy Big Grin

Bruno is gorgeous, you should post more pics of him! Love Struck

You all seem to go for long lines instead of extending leads. Are extending leads bad?

there bad as such just training lines give more freedom due to length upto 320ft if you get a 100mtr one
also you need to make sure you get a tape lead not cord lead as you can loose fingers and also make sure you get the strongest possible extending lead as a staffy can snap the weaker ones thumbs up

They're not 'bad' but they don't extend very far. Long lines are very long so they get more of a run around, and also you can teach them to come back to you. Extendable leads are too short to really teach the dog to come back to you, so I prefer long lines for running around, but will juse an extendable lead when I don't want him to run but let him go ahead.
