When is the best time to get speyed
I have been thinking of letting Ruby have a litter but now realising how hard work it is. Is there a good time to get them speyed, Ruby is 7 months. Is this a cruel and sore operation for the dog or the right thing to do? What are the pros and cons i think i am asking and what are the health implications either way. Any advice please is it recommend.

I don't think it's cruel at all, Daisy was a bit out of it the day of the operation but that would be the anesthetic, after that she was absolutely fine, just had to limit her exercise a bit that was all. I know some people do it before the first season, if you wait until after I think it's 10 weeks after the previous season has finished that you have to wait. Personally I would always have my girls done.

Yes, it's a very personal decision. I don't neuter my dogs, but if you're going to do it I would recommend you leave it until at least after her first season, and preferably after her second to allow her to mature physically and mentally.

Thank Caryll
Quite alot to read thanks for sending all the links. I am even more confused now. I maybe think dont do it unless medically necessary. My vet asked if i wanted Ruby done when she was so small it does not seem right to put there through that.

It's a personal choice & lots of fors & againsts. Think long & hard read all the pro's & con's and decide from there

If you don't get her done, can you make sure she never accidentally gets pregnant? If not I think you should get her done! I work I'm animal welfare and I am therefore pro desexing but that's because I don't want to see them getting bred. So as long as you can make sure she never have puppies then it's your personal choice! It's not a cruel think to get it done though!

I really don't mean to sound harsh, but if you were thinking of getting a litter for no real reason, i think you should spay so the notion doesnt come on you again in a few months/years!

Re: When is the best time to get speyed
It's a personal decision, but out of responsibility, if you're not going to spay her, you have to make ABSOLUTE certain you will never let any accidents happen. I'm glad you changed your mind about her having a litter, because there's no real reason for it; she doesn't need it, it adds to the number of puppies already existing, etc. But if you think you won't be able to keep her safe for her whole life from breeding, best thing is to spay her. It's not cruel, don't worry about it, they heal up quickly.
