Hello guys,
I need some advise again. I think Tommy might be constipated. He has has very runny stools, mucousy with a bit of blood (sorry for the detail but I think it's required) They have gotten gradually worse since Weds evening (now Fri morning at the time of writing). He seems ok in himself, still playing and running around.
Any ideas or should I get him to the vet?
Cheers, Mike

Tommy is fed raw isn't he? I've heard that too many raw bones can cause constipation.

Is the blood bright red or is it dark in colour?

If he has runny poo then he isn't constipated. If he'd had too many bones the poo would be whitish and hard.

I'd starve him for a day and then give him something easily digestible to see if it's still going through him.

Yes, he is raw fed but he doesn't have what I would consider too any bones. I also give him mince, veg and organs. But agree that a raw diet is more prone to causing constipation.
Caryll, loose mucousy stools are a symptom of constipation. The mucous of the intestine can pass around the blockage which is causing the constipation.
I put some olive oil in his turkey and rice this morning, hope it helps. praying

I cant really advise as such as i do not feed raw, but i always thought constipation was a blockage and that you can not pass 'anything'.

From what you put i could only asvise same as caryll, starve for a day then chicken and rice, just a something easy on the stomach....

What Is Constipation?
Constipation—difficult, infrequent or absent bowel movements—is one of the most common health problems associated with a pet’s digestive system. Telltale signs, such as dry, hard stools and straining when trying to defecate, can also be an indicator of other disorders, including hypothyroidism. Another symptom of this disorder is the passage of mucus when a dog attempts to defecate.

Thats good, if the blood was dark in colour it could be coming from deeper within and may have been a bigger problem..
My 3 year old niece was hospitalised last year with severe contipation and needed an enema.. My sister never realised as she had the runs Sad So you could be right.. The Dr said the same thing to my sister, that there was a blockage but the runny bits escape around it and with the blockage causing a gas build up it "explodes" out like diarohea Sad

A raw diet can lead to constipation if too many bones are fed, but you will most likely see chalky, hard poos than a full 'blockage'. If it's a blockage then the oil won't do anything as the hardened faeces causing the blockage won't be affected by it.
