Still lead scared
I was just doing a training session in the house and it was going well when I thought I'd try "heel" then thought it was daft not to do it outside where there is more space. The panic when he saw the lead was mad, ears back, tail under, body as close to the ground as possible and tried to get away from me! I had to carry him out. He seems ok when he's out but not as bouncy as I'd expect from a dog that enjoys walks! I even took his training treats but he won't eat them outside. I really wish he'd get over this little fear of his He still shivers in the car if we go to the park too

Re: Still lead scared
It took Logan a loooonnng time to enjoy going out for walks, occassionally he still pulls to go back inside as soon as we leave the house. He always runs from his lead, partly due to him being lazy, partly due to he knows he has to do what he is told when he's on lead lol.
Charlie will most likely just grow out of this phase, it's important though to get him out as much as possible to help him. Even if it means several short walks compared to a few longer ones.

Alfie does this also although not quite to this extent - he will just run away from the lead when I try and put it on. He was very scared outside as well of traffic and people etc but the more we go for walks the better he has become, he will soon get used to it

Re: Still lead scared
Try taking a favourite toy or some treats with you to tempt him along.
With the car try just getting him to sit in the car for a few minutes then go back indoors, gradually build up the time he is in the car then try a short journey just a few minutes, then again gradually build up the time you are moving in the car.
If he is still nervous of the car think about a Thundershirt as in the link below, they really can work and are available at Amazon:

Re: Still lead scared
Sounds awful but I ended up going down the 'cruel to be kind' road. Tommy hated his collar, his lead and even tempting him out of the front door was a nightmare. In the end I pulled him along, with him trying to bite the lead and jump up to get his paws round it. I talked to him all the way to calm him down and after about 3 minutes, which seemed much longer, he was walking ok. I then turned round and went home and gave him loads of praise. After 3 days of doing this 3 times a day he was brilliant.
He now waits by the door each morning, itching to get out on the park. Some people might not advocate what I did but I'd tried all the other methods and gotten nowhere.

Re: Still lead scared
Have you tried taking on and off inside? You could also try leaving it where it is visible so he gets used to seeing it.

Katy is absolutley fine when we are out walking. It's getting the collar or harness on that i have trouble with, she will run away, then she will do the terrier pose (head down, bottom up)barking like mad. Takes a good 5mins to encourage her to have it on

Re: Still lead scared
Thanks everyone, Caryll I don't put the lead on him in the house, I will try that. Jstaff the lead is in the hall out the way because I didn't want him thinking it was a toy and biting it. Bloomooner, we try and take him out twice a day but he missed last night (and this morning as I was shopping...but he'll go out after lunch). Kathy I'll try taking a toy again, we did that in the very early days...he won't even look at a treat outside! Ellie, he has been getting some better in traffic, just stops at the BIG buses and lorries now. Mat, as soon as we get out the door he is up the step wanting to come back in, he's a funny currant! I hope he outgrows it soon, we all look forward to taking him out but hate seeing him not liking it. Jenc, guess I'm not the only one then! lol. You just assume all dogs would love walking...we'll keep at it and let you know how it goes
