hi guys Smile I've recently been into a pet store called "Jollyes" I was getting Lola some new toys as she has completely demolished the ones she had. While at the counter I got talking to a woman who worked there, basically she said the bakers dog food makes dogs hyperactive, their breath smells, there poo smells and they also eat there own poo (lola ticked all of these boxes" So we changed Lola food to a new "steamed" dog food called "K9 optimum" has anyone else been told anything bad about bakers food, or anything good about this k9 optimum, it's new on the market apparently, but Lola seems to like it. The woman in the shop described Lola without knowing her!?!

Bakers isn't highly thought of by most of the forum, it's full of additives and fillers that are known to cause hyperactivity, and health problems.

It's not even really that cheap! There are some fantastic dog foods at a sensible price. I'm singing the praises of James Wellbeloved at the moment and it's always on special at Pets At Home. Smile

Also that it's readily available. They have it everywhere, corner shops, supermarkets etc. A high percentage of pet owners just lift what is convenient to them.

I honestly didn't know it was that bad but the woman in the shop said the reason why they eat their own poo is because when it comes back out it hasn't digested or anything & all the nutrients have just come back out again ... (Or something along them lines)

Bakers is crap! I'm surprised that they haven't tried to sue the forum yet, the amount of times we've rubbished it! Laughing It's full of additives that are known to cause hyperactivity & allergies.

K9 looks ok, although not the best. For me, it would contain too much cereal (maize, rice & pats), but it has a good meat content.

Yeah, Bakers is crap, they're full of additives and stuff that makes the dog hyperactive, and not giving them the nutrients they need I guess. The reason it's so popular is because they look so colourful and appealing...to people. But anyway, I feed Loki on Wainwright's, it's a good food, and I've never had any problems with it.

The trouble is there are different laws regarding additives for humans compared to animals. Sad

A lot of the things that are not allowed in human food are allowed, by law, in animal food. Disgusting, yes, but legal. angry

My friends little cocker spaniel is fed on bakers and it is the loopist little thing ever ... I think it's all wired up on the colourings and what not , yikes !
It's hard to tell people though unless they ask .., it's like telling your friends what not to feed their children :/

But wouldn't you prefer to tell her than her finding out off someone else when you know that it's not good for the dog? Put yourself in her situation, would you want to know what rubbish your feeding your dog? Maybe just ask her to read about it because you've heard a few bad reports? Xx

It's very difficult to connect specific illnesses to a dog food, especially one that is huge, well known & advertises on the tv! All we can do is warn people, as many as we can!

I know I would, and I wouldn't care much if I offended them. I've put a few people off Bakers, and although they weren't happy about me telling them they were feeding their dog rubbish, they did actually change & so did their dogs' health - so job done! Big Grin

Nothing wrong with sugar beet mate so dont worry about that as some premium foods use it too. Its a natural high fibre food but keeps stools firm. This is good for anal glands as it empties them naturally.

Try wainrights then, its what i moved my two onto after trying all the premium foods. Join pah vip and youll get a 10% off voucher and a 15kg bag of salmon and potatoe comes in under £30 and buying in bulk gets you approx the equivilent of 3 free bags of 2kg. I feed just under guidlines so thats about a months worth of food for two dogs which equates to 50p each per day and they are both full of life and healthy.

"hyperactive, their breath smells, there poo smells and they also eat there own poo"

I had two Dobermanns from 1980 to 2001 (one after the other, and from puppies)and fed them both on Bakers, and none of the above applied to them. I honestly thought and believed that I was feeding them a good diet, even a superior diet compared to some, and they were both super healthy until bone cancer, at a reasonable age for a Dobe, claimed them. They ate it up every day, no fuss, no bother, no having to add tasty bits to it to get them to eat it. The only bee that I had in my bonnet was that Pedigree Chum was too rich for dogs and produced loose poo that other dogs found irresistable, due to the excreted unwanted nutrients.

So, 10 years after our last Dobe, when we got our Staff puppy, I started him on Bakers (he was on Wagg before). I was amazed that almost immediately he turned his nose up at Bakers and wouldn't eat it, and that was when I joined this forum to ask if Staffies were fussy feeders. I was gobsmacked to learn from experienced Staff owners that Bakers was NOT the terrific food I thought it was and I had loads of advice.

It had never occurred to me before to read the actual composition of the various dog foods, I just trusted that the dog food manufacturers were producing a good balanced food.

That's the trouble - you expect the manufacturers to be honest about their products! Add to that all the tv hype & you have a recipe for disaster! Sad

Harvey who I've had for just a week now came to me on Bakers. He had a really weird grease on his coat, farted which smelt like nothing on earth and continually scratched. I put him onto good qualilty food and he has stopped scratching within a day.
