can pup go out?
Hi.
I got my 8 week old blue staffy pup today. She's booked into vet on Monday for her first jab. Is she allowed outside at all without herabs? Just wondering if she can wander round my garden etc.
Also, how long before she settles at night, she's as regular as clockwork, howls every 2 hours so far. She's got blankets, a teddy and a hot water bottle in her cage with her. Is there anything else I can do to help her settle?
Thanks

Re: can pup go out?
Firstly she is gorgeous but could you please reduce the size of your avatar pic as it is quite large.
She really shouldn't be put on the grassed areas until she is fully vaccinated.. Diseases like Parvo can live in grass and dirt for a few years after an infected dog has been in the area.. So even though you may not have had another animal in your own yard, an infected dog may have been there some time ago and your little one can still get sick.. If you have been in your house for a number of years and KNOW that no other un vaccinated or sick animals have been in your yard then I think short periods on the lawn should be ok.. Other than that take her as many new places as you can carry her to get her used to all the smells and sounds of the outside world..
As you only got her today be prepared for a few disrupted nights, they are all different some will only take a night or 2 to settle others may take a few weeks .. A ticking clock sometimes helps them to settle as it mimics the sound of mum and siblings heartbeat

I would wait to take her out just to be safe. A blanket over the crate so light doesn't get in should help.

Wait to take her out unless you're 100% sure that no animals have been in the yard. If you're not completely sure, you'll have to wait. It's annoying to have to wait a few weeks, but worth it. As for the crying...unfortunately, that's just how they are sometimes until they settle down. Ignore her (unless she needs the toilet) and eventually she'll learn. In the meantime, maybe a radio near her with the volume low might help calm her.

I've always allowed pups into the garden right from the first day. It speeds up the house training & helps to make the pup more confident & outgoing.
Other than the garden, though, only if you carry her. A week (sometimes 2 weeks, depending on the vet) after the second jabs she'll be ok.

If you have Paint or any photo-editing software (even a free online one I guess), you can resize it.

She should be safe in the garden but keep an eye on her anyway, because at that age they like to pick up anything they can get a hold of in their mouth! Logan was desperate for lifting stones and running away with them.
I wouldn't go much further, however, it is a good idea to take her for a drive and bring her to places where you can carry her and experience new noises and sounds. Plus people will be in love with her because she's so small and cute and this is a great way for her to experience new people!

I took her to school this morning when I dropped the kids off so they could show her off. They were proud as punch with the crowd they gathered.
She's only been with us a day but she's made such an impact. Were all smitten

Re: can pup go out?
I had Katy out in the garden at 6wks (Yes i know i got her too early, but put it this way i'm her 2nd owner but thats another story) My garden is secure & no foxes can get in. It certainly has helped speed up toilet training. As for your sleep i cant really help, katy is put to bed & sometime during the night we find her climbing onto ours. She sleeps through then till we get up, but i wouldn't encourage that especially if you want some quilt

Re: can pup go out?
I had Tommy in the garden from 8 weeks old. It's a secure garden where no other dogs can get in. At first I introduced him to the patio area and stayed with him. He wouldn't stay out on his own. I just used to let him explore, bit by bit but watched him very carefully. He's 16 weeks old now and fit as a fiddle. Good luck with your puppy!

Re: can pup go out?
I heard a ticking clock helps as they represent this as their mothers heartbeat? or a radio on low, so you don't get disturbed by it I found with tia that if she was downstairs she would be worse, so i put her outside my bedroom door left it open slightly so she knew i was only a few feet away from her, found she settled alot better, now she takes up my whole bed

Re: can pup go out?
Night 2 was a huge improvement on her first night. I left her at 10.30 with hot water bottle and radio. She cried for a few minute then I didn't hear her again until 2am and that was because my 2 year old woke up and went downstairs so she was excited as someone was there. I cuddled her and popped her back into bed and she woke again at 7am. I'm feeling refreshed after a decent sleep

Re: can pup go out?
I agree with Caryll , our garden is only used by our older girl , she used it from day one and so did Tommy to help with the toilet training (we never paper trained either of them ) and also becoming used to the big wide world. BUT if you have any doubts about other visiting animals etc then it really is a no no
