Bart was bitten by a black widow
I am a little nervous now that I am sure my little guy was bitten by a black widow spider. We came home from taking my son to school this morning and Bart was nosing around on the porch after using the bathroom. I called to him and saw him messing with something. I picked him up when I saw him grab the spider and he dropped it. I saw the telltale sign on the abdomen and knew it was a younger black widow spider. He now has a small red spot on his nose and we were told there is nothing to really do but wait it out. I hope my little guy is strong enough to pass the venom through his system. This really, really sucks...

Re: Bart was bitten by a black widow
Oh man that's terrible. I have them in my backyard during the summer months here in California and I'm always afraid Bacon will find one. I hope to hear good news in the morning.

Re: Bart was bitten by a black widow
Ps found this hope its useful?
Treatment
There is an antivenin available that has been helpful in people but may be cost prohibitive in the veterinary setting. Black widow spider antivenin is usually available through human hospitals. Other treatment options may include:
Relaxing the muscles and assisting with breathing
Medications to reduce muscle spasms
Hospitalization with intravenous fluids
Dogs tend to survive black widow spider bites with veterinary treatment.
Home Care and Prevention
There is no home care for a black widow spider bite. Do not place a tourniquet above the bite. This does not stop the venom from spreading and may severely compromise the circulation to that area of the body. Keep your pet quiet and calm and take him/her to your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Re: Bart was bitten by a black widow
Thanks to all the well wishes a good thoughts for our little guy. As of this morning he is VERY VERY active!!! The wound is no longer seeping and he is doing his 10 minutes of madness by running ALL OVER THE HOUSE AT TOP SPEED!!!
I was very worried about the little guy, but we will keep watching him. I will call the vet this morning again and see if there is anything else I should be on the lookout for with regards to signs of problems. Right now, he is just fine.
Whew!!!

Pleased to read that Bart is doing well, sounds like he had a lucky escape as it was only a young spider but could still have been very dangerous, I hate spiders they are my worst nightmare. Thanks for the up date.
