Hi there
We are Derek and Amanda and we pick our little bundle of joy Roxy up on saturday morning.
She is a 9 week all tiger brindle gorgeous girl.
We have had her in our house a few times for maybe an hour at a time just to get her used to the kids when she comes permenant
Our question is as we live in a flat (very very large flat) we want to crate train her.
How is the best way to go about it? we were thinking a crate and make a little fenced in area with gates in our kitchen which has plenty of room to do so. she could then sleep in her crate and have the fenced off area to play in.
What would be the best way to potty train her in this scenario?
second option would be a large puppy pen like this http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.bz1-img.com/images_customers/02/06/10286336_84348_full.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.buzzillions.com/reviews/iris-usa-inc-4-panel-indoor-outdoor-pet-pen-in-white-reviews&h=768&w=1024&sz=93&tbnid=4tPXxoJq5dFTrM:&tbnh=100&tbnw=133&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dindoor%2Bpuppy%2Bpen%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&zoom=1&q=indoor+puppy+pen&usg=__Qo_uIYvmgwd3AEcYg1p8Vz2jV1s=&docid=wu5yMEjw-2gCRM&hl=en&sa=X&ei=a5XtUJrXI4KJ0AXt1oHoDQ&ved=0CF8Q9QEwBQ&dur=12
How would this work to potty train her?
Lots and lots of questions and really appreciate any advice

Re: Hi there
Hi from me and Debo. Make the crate positive place for her, don't make her go in there. Put some treats in the crate, let her get them in her own time. When she goes in side, don't close the door for the first time. Then put some more treats in,let her get in,close the door, open just before she finished theme. Do you have her old toy from the breeder? Put it also in the cage. Make the cage nice and comfy. We also put dark blanket over it so is nice and dark. For a night time you could put some of your jumpers to make her settle down. We also fed Debo in there ,they say dogs won't wee or poo where they sleep or eat.

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
We also live in a flat which is on the ground floor and we have a garden. We have a crate for Rocky to go in which he does whenever he wants to. We just leave the door open all day and he will come and go as he pleases.
At night he sleeps on the bottom of our bed though and most mornings can be found under the duvet cuddled up to either me or my hubby.

Re: Hi there
How would we potty train he with the crate though? just put a puppy mat down inside with her food bowls and bed?
Then try and get her too pee/poo on a mat outside her crate until shes old enough to go out ?

Re: Hi there
Oh and about potty training. Do you have a garden? If yes, take her outside for toilet. Will save you money for pads. If not you can use pads. Put one in play pen in one place, take her there every 2hrs,after wake up,after eating, playing and when you see she needs to go. First few times you can carry her there, place her on the matt, say wee,wee or whatever you using, keep her there until she does something, when she does lots of fuss. Soon, when you say wee,wee she will fallow you to the matt. This work for Debo. The most important thing is to keep it positive. Good luck.

Sorry if I wasn't to clear. I would put only one mat outside the crate. Some people put few around the house but I think with one she will get it quicker. Good luck

Re: Hi there
The pen looks good, should be fine. We only use one mat in the kitchen, every time it got dirty we put new one in the same place. I think to many spred around can confuse her where she can wee or not. Put food bowl in only at the feeding time and water you can keep it there is big enough. So bed in one end and wee/poo mat in the other.

Oh,she might think the mat is a new exiting chewing toy, if she starts to chew it I would remove it and put it outside the pen

They won't want to soil there crate. Thats a good thing about crate training.
Do you have a garden? I know a lot will say no, but when I had my first we toilet trained outside using a lead from day 1.

Re: Hi there
As Janey said they won't soil where they sleep. I wouldn't put it in side, she might eat the mat. The problem with the pen is if you don't put mat in there,it's big enough for her to do her businness on the floor. I've never had a pen, crate did the job.

Even at 9 weeks? and if she has food and water in there?
no we dont have a garden but we have a small patio area out front but strange dogs could have been in there so dont know whether to risk this?
I think i will stick with the crate and pad in the crate and pad outside the crate ?

Re: Hi there
She will have accidents, you need to help her to learn where she's allowed to do it.
If you put mat in her crate then a) she will wee/poo in there
b) she might treat it as a toy and chew it
I would have only one mat somewhere in the house. We have crate in the living room and mat was in the kitchen.
Are you planinig to leave food down for her for whole day? Or you gonna give it to her 3 times a day? It would be better if she has food at certain times,it will help you lean toilet habits. I would feed her in the crate and then remove the bowl.

If she looks like she's going to pee take her on the mat ,at the same time you correct her and show her where to do it.

Re: Hi there
Get her used to the crate gradually. Make it look comfy, put some nice toys in there, etc., let her go in in her own time. Don't shut the door to it at all until she's comfortable being in there, and then only do it a bit at a time.
As for the toilet training, I'd put the puppy pad outside the crate since they don't do anything where they sleep if they can help it. If you see she's going to do something, just carry her over to the pad and let her do something there and then give her lots of praise.
With Loki, we had to wait two weeks before his second jab, and another two weeks before taking him out, but ask your vet, they'll be able to tell you

Re: Hi there
Ok, we had to house train a few of our dogs living in a flat. You wont be able to take her out on the streets until she has had her course of injections. So to begin with I would just layer newspaper over the whole playpen area as she won't know where to go! TBH I wouldn't even bother trying to house train her or anything until she can go outside as you will just teach her its ok to go certain places inside the house which will make things harder in the long run.
Do you have a balcony?
Once she can go outside you need to take her down for a wee at least every hour, and everytime she eats or wakes up. Then put her on the floor and use a certain word or sound as she is going or about to go so she associates going with this sound (saves your life in the winter when its freezing!). Dont let her go back inside til she has done her business (agai teaches them to hurry up and go when you bring them outside). Also at the same time take away most of the newspaper and just leave a couple of sheets. She should automatically go to the newspaper to piddle as thats what she was on in the pen before. Also put a couple around your house and usually they automtically go there out of habit if there are accidents! Don't praise her though. Going on the newspaper isn't good but it is more acceptable than the carpet!
Phew bit of an essay. Hope it helps!!! xx

Re: Hi there
I think you need to choose what's gonna work for you and your pup. My method worked on Debo, Lc's methods worked on her dogs. I think it's important that from the time you gonna be able to take her outside, you will stick only with outside. No more pads in flat. You will have lots of journeys outside but she will learn quicker that only outside is a place to wee/poo. If she has accident in the house just ignore it.

Re: Hi there
Think Im gonna just put the crate in the living room and put a mat close to her crate.
I was thinking maybe feeding her at 8 12 4 and 8 would this be ok? and just stick close by her until she pee's or poo's and hopefully i notice in time and stick her on the mat lol or maybe put a mat in the kitchen as its off the living room and let her try and go in there to toilet maybe that will be better until i can get her out?
Not going with the pen idea anymore as i think it will just make her do it in 1 corner and sleep in the other.
Do they have a tendancy to mess their crates when they are very young ?

Re: Hi there
You can put the mat where ever you want to. We had it in the kitchen, because we have carpet in the living room, and was worring that even with a mat the smell will stay in the carpet. With Debo we used "wee, wee" command. First few days we carried him on the mat with that command, then he fallowed us there and finally we just had to say the command he would rush on the mat. When you noticed that she's about to do it anywhere else make a laud noice to distract her and place her on the mat. The feeding times are ok.

I wouldn't because that way you can't control her. Stick to the feeding times, make sure she does her businness and then leave her in the crate.

My partner Amanda was wondering what is the best thing to do at night if she crys?
Do we get up with her or ignore her ?
Shes worried if we just ignore herand leave her locked in the cage she might think the cage is punishment but shes also worried that she might learn if she crys she gets attention and then never settle ?
what wouldanyone suggest?

Re: Hi there
As much as hash it's sound, ignore. She will learn quickly. At day time, when she's comfy with the crate, you can put her in there, lock the gate, leave the room. Go to her only when she's calm. You have to react quickly when she stop crying. This way she will learn that is ok for her to be by herself and that you always come back. Good luck and enjoy puppyhood.
