Pistachios for treats Empty Pistachios for treats

Hello again all,

I have found that my Bartholomew loves pistachios for treats. I have a huge bag of shelled pistachios that are a perfect size for treats. I do at times put peanut butter in his chew tire and he also enjoys this. Does anyone have information if pistachios are okay for him dietary wise?

They're not toxic, but like all nuts they're high in fat & too many can cause upset stomachs or even obesity!

With any high-fat food such as nuts, there is a risk for pancreatitis if you feed too many to your dog. While pistachios are not toxic to dogs, too many could lead to health problems, with the most common problem being diarrhoea.

In moderation, I'd say they're okay, but I wouldn't use them as a regular treat. Smile

I definitely don't give them in large quantities. I use them to supplement my other training treats. Thanks for the reply.

maybe better giving low calorie chew sticks as treats but nuts a few times cant hurt especially if they burn off the calories during excercise

I am mainly giving low calorie training treats. .5 calorie each. The pistachios are about 1 calorie each (counted them out per serving) so I use them to supplement the doggie training treat.

Our Charlie is only 11.5 weeks old, what treats can you give? The ones I've seen in the shops seem to say not to give before 4 months old.

When Rolo was that age, we used torn up tiny bits of ham or chicken, and diced carrot... he still loves carrots Smile
