Food aggression?

Hi today was the first time I have seen food aggression from my pup. My son was sat next to me whilst the dog was chewing on a hoof, as my son lent over our dog snarled at him showing teeth etc.....he has not done this ever before with anyone or anything.

Is this normal, I discouraged it by calling him to me and then let my son pick up the hoof and let him have it again, I continued to do this with my son picking it up and then calling our dog and returning it.

Is this normal? and how can it be discouraged please?

You are already doing the right thing. Once they know they will get it back and that people are allowed to take it the problem goes away. We still make sure to take food and bones away from Suki every once in awhile just to make sure the problem doesn't come back.

Yes it is normal for some dogs but knock it on head straight away and i mean now. Get the dog to sit or otherwise work for food to show you provide and control mealtimes. Personally its the most important bond between humans and dogs. If they look to you as a provider of nice things youll go along way. You need to be at a place where you can pick a half eaten food bowl and get them to sit for it. Confidence is your main friend but diversion can help you get there. Never had prob with mine but a friend with a gsd showed a treat then threw it away and picked up bowl then got dog to sit for it again. Thankfully one of the easiest training methods if your consistant.

Thanks with me its never been an issue but I have now told my son he needs to continue to do this both with treats and the food.

Just make sure that if you are going to take food/treats away from him that it's supervised at all times
