Murphy hit twelve weeks on Wednesday so we ventured out for his first proper walk, which he seemed to thoroughly enjoy until on the way home we encountered an 18week old German shepherd who walking the opposite way. This dog greeted murphy by barking in his face and jumping right on top of him. Thursday we didn't meet anyone to say hello to but yesterday he met two new dogs both of which he immediately barked at and started jumping around on his lead at. He has two older sisters who he has never seen do this when they meet another dog, and he has been attending puppy classes for three weeks and up until now he has always been calm when being introduced. So what I am wondering is, is it just the excitement at being on a walk? or is it something I need to nip in the bud before it goes any further and if so what is the best way to do so? He has dogs he plays with at work that he has no problems with saying hello to calmly, it definitely just seems to be new ones.

I'd try and get him calm for new intros. You have two ways (or maybe more if anyone else has some ideas! Big Grin ) to do it. One is to get him to sit until he's calm and then introduce quietly. If he jumps around, do an about turn & take him a few paces away & start again. The other way is with the "Watch" command. When new dogs are coming towards you hold a treat in front of your face & say "Watch". As soon as he looks at the treat, give him calm praise & treat. Gradually increase the time between saying "Watch" and giving the treat & hopefully that will keep his attention on you and not the other dogs.

Caryll's advice is good. He should improve with age and the more dogs he is introduced to.
