Walks advice
Bacchus is getting about 2 hours of walks per day broken down to
7 am: 20 mins for toileting. Mixed pavement and soft ground.
10 am: about 1 hour. Mainly on the local common with pavement work there and back ( about 15 mins.)
Evening: about 40 mins. similair surfaces as 10 am walk.
He gets out into to the garden as and when he likes throughout the day/evening, and short toilet walks in between.
The 10 am and evening walks are great for getting rid of excess energy as he is off-lead most of the time and never seems unduly tired, but likes a nap after these sessions. He still has the "mad" 5 mins. after the evening session.
How does this routine sound?

Re: Walks advice
I normally find myself giving the opposite advice and saying they need more exercise but honestly it may be a little bit too much. As a general rule walks on lead should be kept to 5 mintues per month of age. Off lead play and running about don't really count so you are still in the guidelines.
Just take care not to overexercise him while his neuromusclar system is still devolping. He will add weight fater than his bones and ligaments can keep up with which can lead to long term health issues later on.

Re: Walks advice
It seems very committed I think on lead walks should be 5mins per months old.. But that dosen't include play time, so you don't seem far off the mark He is lucky to have you available for 3 walkies a day..
We have a 20min walk at 5:30am before work Almost kills me most mornings And at about 5:30pm we have a 10 min walk to usually the park, half hour or so of ball play etc, 10min walk home.. Now that its daylight savings time over here it is getting better for night walks as it's not dark until 8:30pm So I try to fit another one in around 8, but sometimes it's just a bit of yard play..

Re: Walks advice
I think you're doing fine. To be nitpicky, as jstaff says, the last walk might be a bit too long, but I wouldn't put a spoke in it and say 'don't do it'

Re: Walks advice
Thanks guys.
He's never more than 20 mins. on hard surfaces. He's 4 mths now so I think/hope he's within the parameters.
Just wanted reassurance.

Re: Walks advice
Tommy has been out anything up to 1 1/2 hours many times with mostly off lead walking . Generally depends whether I am home or not so the lengths and times vary. But maintained the 5 minute / month lead walk rule at all times execpt for a 1 off when we did the staffy walk last month

Re: Walks advice
TBH when I say 20 mins. lead walking, we're probably only covering about the equivalent of 5 mins. normal walking, what with the time spent standing still to stop the pulling. :atwitsend The rest of the time is romping through long grass.
We are very fortunate as 5min. walk ( 20 min Bacchus time) from our house and we are in the countryside. Just got back from a walk and saw 4 deer, a buzzard, a pair of wrens and a woodcock. We also overlook the North Sea on our walks and frequently see a pod of dolphins playing close to shore.

It does tend to be a lot colder up here though. We don't get as warm summers either, so it's swings and roundabouts.
