Cropped Ears - ok or not?

I just can't get past the ears, cracking looking dogs though.

Moo is getting fat atm and I hate it!

Its weird, cus I obviously dont approve of cropping, but I like the way APBT's look with cropped ears .. I wonder if its cus I've studied the breed for so many yrs it just looks right to me now .. or just that I'm the opposite of you Janey, in that rather than it being the first thing I see, it dosent register

Each to there own tbh, love the look, but the cropped ears is the first thing I notice.

One of the things I have against cropping ears and docking tails is that other dogs could misread the body language of the dog with them which could result in damage being done to one or more dogs.

it's only barbaric when normal people do it, if a vet put htem asleep they can feel a thing

But what about when they come round from after the anesthetic they would still feel the pain then. Why put your pet through unnecessary suffering ? I dont understand this, sorry

Steve, in order to get the look right the dog has to be awake, although sedated. Barbaric & totally unnecessary. I thank god it's illegal in the UK.

no they were born with tails and ears and thats the way it should stay unless it is for a medical reason IMO

doctor cut my back open while i was awake i couldn't feel a things, along they have drug so they cant feel anything it's ok to me, it when tom ,* or harry does they do more damage then good to the poor thing that does my head in

Look it up on google. Every site says the same thing, that it's very painful for the dog afterwards. Why would you want to chop parts of your dog off? It's close on being evil. I hate it & will never be persuaded that it's either attractive, necessary or not cruel.

vet who care about animal wouldn't do it they didn't give the dog something..

You're not listening. The dog is sedated but not knocked out as they have to see that the ears are symetrical & suit the shape of the head. Afterwards, even with pain relief, it's very painful. Why would you put your dog through that when it's totally unnecessary?

like i just said when i had op on my back they cut it open not putting me a sleep..

Chopping off bits of a dog's ears just to make it 'look sharper' is barbaric.

i wouldn't get my dog done but if it done properly i cant see a problem... what i can not stand are the one who does it them self which is barbaric...

They are both barbaric & any vet that performs the operation should be struck off.

I think it's wrong to crop ears and dock tails without a medical reason to, it's unnecessary and there's no reason to put your dog through that for the sake of appearance. But I won't lie, I do like the look of cropped ears on dogs. Wouldn't have it done to Loki and would be happy if it was illegal everywhere, but I do think it looks good.

I think it looks awful. I much prefer to see natural ears.

I agree with everyone against it , regardless of the look people prefer or whether people don't mind . Fact is they were born with big ears and the only reason they are being cropped is for vanity and thats the vanity of the owner and not the dog .
100% bang out of order in my book and again pleased its banned in the UK, if somebody does it over here then maybe we should crop their ears and see how they feel about it ( because the dog thought it's owner would look better in the street with him like that )

If people want a breed with erect ears, maybe they should get one that's born that way, and not a drop eared one.

How was it brought about that cropped ears and docked tails was appealing anyway? Seems odd.

With pit dogs it was a big peice of wobbly skin for the other dog to get a hold of, that can bleed .. a lot!

Exactly , I could understand the motivation back in those barbaric times and perhaps in a sick twisted way it was an act of kindness to those dogs, but now the only "justified" reason would be if you wanted to put them in the pit.......................................

Not the majoirty no, but unfortunately you know as well as I do its still going on as strong as ever, and there is still a very healthy desire for pit dogs all over the world and an even larger amount that try to preserve that look with the cropped ears

As I said, I dont agree with it, and would never condone it, but honest opinion, on here, amongst lovers of the breed for the right reasons ... I like the look, just not the practice, if that makes any sense

Agree with you, Andy, I do like the look of it but consider it unnecessary and wrong for the sake of appearance. And I know that with some dogs it's done as a health thing, like with certain working dogs it's practical for them (at least, I think I read something like that), but it's odd how it became fashionable (for lack of a better word).

Got to disagree with both of you - I find the look really ugly.

i dont agree with the practice in the slightest but i must also say due to the ears the picture of the first dog dont look the stereotypical pitbull where the second one does, the fact is that is the way the breed has looked for a long time and now we need to relise thats not there natural look. if ear clipping was banned in all countrys give it 10/20 years and saw a clipped dog we would all be apalled at the look.
and now to the pain point i would deff agree it would be very painfull i know its not the dogs choice but if you have ever had a tattoo you know it hurts but you keep going back for more .
and in a breed of dog that loves running into hard objects and bounce off walls without flinching im sure they wouldnt be to bothered after being cropped.
but getting back to the point of the thread both lovely dogs

It's illegal in all states and territories in Australia too, I think only since the late 90's though..

Sigh, the arguments I have had with NUMEROUS breeders wanting to crop tails (not about ears but similar).....

Its illegal for veterinarians to perform either tail docking or ear cropping in South Africa as its considered unethical - putting an animal through an unnecessary surgical operation in order to meet an aesthetic demand of its owner.

And even IF (which is NOT the case) it was not painful if performed under general anaesthesia, one is still putting an animal under the risk of anaesthetic for what? Human vanity?

Sorry. Totally and UTTERLY against it.

Whats difficult here is that people will still do it (even though its illegal for any surgical procedure to be performed on an animal by anyone other than a veterinarian) so then they put us in a terrible spot as then do you let the animal suffer by having a 'lay person' do it....

I think its barbaric and totally unnecessary. If APBT breeders want their dogs with tiny ears, why dont they start a breeding programme to do so. No, they want the quick solution, quick solution = quick bucks, no thought for their chosen breed and they call themselves dog lovers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

absolutely agree with you , it is the ears i love the most i love the feeling when i stroke Trouble , it just would not be the same with the flappy bits

oh and it is painful after , a friends bull terrier had to have his tail docked as he had chewed it and had got it so infected , he said his dog cried for days after with the pain even though he had pain relief , so how on earth can anyone say they prefer the look knowing that getting that look causes suffering at some point to an animal .....do we not own these dogs because we love them to bits and abhor animal cruelty of any kind . and to having docking for a look is cruelty and to admire the look i feel is kind of condoning from a distance ...just saying

on the other hand its awully cruel to chop up your dog to make it look good.

I am finding it hard to understand why somebody would cut their babies ears or tail. Please explain this to me. Caryll I'm with you

Which side of the fence are you on Hayley . I'm on the one that lets them keep the bits that mummy and daddy gave them

im going to stick my 2 pence worth again and say again we need to change the view of what we think of if you think apbt sadly that in my head is cropped ears i do in no way condone it and don't like it (or the thought of the act happening)we really need to change the views we have as i guarantee if ear clipping was banned worldwide if we seen a clipped dog in 20years time we would be outraged at the sight

I would never crop a dogs ears, BUT if some naturally had ears that looked like these i'd have them i love the look, not the fact it's cutting the ears though.

I know what you mean there and it does make sense as it is liking the look but not how it is achieved and this isn't any different to someone saying I would like a labrador that looked like a bit of a poodle and "izzy wizzy lets get busy" there you go

It's strange, but when I think of pitbull I don't think of cropped ears!

What annoys me is that people go on about the fact that fighting dogs had their ears clipped.......have a look at old paintings of fighting dogs in this country - they all have normal ears, just small & 'rose', because the small rose ears were easy to hold back flat against the dog's head & they rarely got too much damage. So it's human vanity that has resulted in cropped ears!

I'd have no problem with a pitbull with erect ears - just not the chopped up ones!
