Hot Water Bottle Empty Hot Water Bottle

Post by hillclaire7 Sat Oct 06 2012, 01:17

Hi all,
So now just over a week till i pick up Lanta, so excited and can't stop looking at toys, treats etc for her.
Just a quick question.....i will be crate training her from day one and have been told to put a hot water bottle in the crate for her first few nights, this will act as her mum/brothers/sisters. I'm just concerned that she may nibble, chew on it and pop the hot water bottle and get burnt or eat it. I was going to get a fluffy hot water bottle cover for it and not have the water inside extremely hot...Any suggestions????

Thank You

**Warning i will be posting a lot of these silly little questions** I dont want to s

I never used a hot water bottle. If you can try to get something with her littermates scent on it and leave a radio or TV on at low volume

Hi, I had a hot water bottle for Steffi, I put it inside a pillowcase and folded it over. I only used hot tap water not boiling water and she never tried to bite it, she used to try and get her whole body on it though, she would curl up so she was right on it Laughing

As long as you don't make it too hot, I think it should be OK Smile but when you pick her up you can ask if you can have something with the scent of her mum/siblings, that might help.

I've never used a hot water bottle. If she did chew it she would end up wett all night, and could possibly take a chill. Sad

Warm bedding is better, with maybe a night light & a radio playing quietly (soft music or a gentle chat show!). Also, ask the breeder to let you have an old tea towel or other piece of cloth that has her mother's scent on it so she can sleep with it.

When we have a chilly evening I warm Percy's blanket on the radiator before he goes to bed in his crate and then put it in his bed as we go to bed....I know it doesn't stay warm for as long as a water bottle but must feel nice and snuggly and secure as he's drifting off and then his own body heat will do the rest Smile x

I used a hot water bottle with Bella. I put some warm, not hot water in it then had it in a cover and wrapped in a blanket. She ended up carrying it to wherever she was going to sleep during the day Laughing

I used a proper pet microwave heatpad thing but only for the first few nights. Also he has about 3 fleece blankets double folded and a huge Nemo stuffed toy to snuggle which was twice the size of him.
He was fine, he'd snuggle right into Nemo.
Half his crate was newspaper so hr could get up n pee if needed, and it worked a treat x
I'd be cautious with a hot water bottle since their teeth are like needles, one small puncture and it could really freak him out.

This what I would use too. In fact I had one in the bottom of my bed last night my toes were freezing. You could always wrap it up if you are concerned

Just put a blanket over the crate this will stop any drafts, her body heat will also not be-able to escape so she'll be nice and snug.
But ask the breeder if they could have something ready ie a smelly teddy or blanket for when you go collect your pup.

We've only had Bacchus for 2 weeks. When we went to pick him up we took an old cardie and let him and his litter mates play with it while we chatted with the breeder. We put him in the crate on the first night with a really cozy bed, the smelly cardie and a chew toy plus newspaper at the non-sleeping end. Never heard a peep from him that night or since but as he is our first staffie I don't know if we were just fortunate.

Good luck Big Grin
