Problems with Bailey again! :(
Hi everyone again....I feel I am not getting very far with Bailey at all....been out with my other dog Tia today and 2 very bouncy springers approached us and he went mental...barking...snarling...which set my other dog barking..so it looked awful from the other dog owner perspective....I was so embarrassed....this poor women thought she was going to get attacked full on...I had control of my dogs but the more I tried to pull them away and turn round away from the situation, the moor Bailey went berserk...
I have nver ever had this happen to me before and I feel I don't think I am good enough to handle him...I love him to bits but don't why he is being so horrid...I wont give up on him even though I feel like it after today, but I feel the only option is to walk him on his own for a while without Tia and see how he behaves without her.
He has not been done either so maybe that is an option..I don't know.
Please any advice. I wish I could put photo's of them together here but I don't know how.

Sounds like Bailey want's to be the pack leader and is protecting, you in his mind, good idea to take him out alone let him know you are in charge if he pulls on his lead stand him still for a while then walk again do this over and over so he knows you are in charge , i wonder do you know any other dog owners ? that maybe you could meet outside and let him socialize with , strangers with a dog will of course go on their way when Bailey. starts barking at them this lets him think job done , he needs to know that other dogs in the main are not a threat to you or him

Re: Problems with Bailey again! :(
I think I have scared most people off at the minute. ...lots of people stop but like my other posts say...he goes mental when ever anyone approaches...jumping up and biting his lead etc...another story same problem..Bailey
I have never had this before with any of my dogs...I feel like sitting on the field and letting everyone come to me with bailey and see how he reacts.
I have got a couple of friends who have staffies and one even with a pup a couple of months junior to Bailey, I might see if I can get together with her and see how they are together.

I can't really add anything as I haven't any experiance. It does sound like walking seperatly may be a good idea you can then concentrate on him and not have 2 dogs to worry about, big hugs, sounds like a bit of a pants walk ><

Thanks I did a bit...I got Bailey because I lost my Rottie Zeus and thought he would be a great pal for Bailey but omg it has been really hard this time with him.
I think I will walk him separate, I didn't want to do it that way but looks like I am going to have to..:

It doesn't have to be forever, just until you are the one in control

Thank you I know, Tia was a little madam if I recall and now at 2 years old she is a lovely staff. But I have never had a dog go quite mental at another at such an early age...this scares me a little with him.

Make sure you are confident when handling him, I'm sure you are but they can feel the tension down the lead if you are becoming nervous. Honestly hun you'll get there with him Xx

I did not mean scared about handling him, I mean scared that he might turn out to be dog that really doesn't like anyone else on walks...if that makes sense.

Re: Problems with Bailey again! :(
Exactly what are you doing when other dogs approach you? How do you react with Bailey?

The owner of those dogs shouldn't have allowed her dogs to run up to yours, seeing bouncy dogs racing towards you, especially if there are several, can be terrifying for us and our dogs. You have no reason to be embarrassed, the other owner should.

I don't know Bailey's history, how old is he?
Bailey was responding to the 2 dogs bouncing towards him, he was probably frightened, he wasn't being horrid.
Do you have the lead clipped to his collar or a harness? You may be able to hold him better if he was in a harness.
Walking him on his own is a good idea, you will be able to concentrate on him without the distractions of another dog, you can also walk him with 2 leads which will give you more control, the second lead can be clipped to either his collar or the front of the harness, you can't do this will all harnesses though.
Untll Bailey's stress levels goes down again, try and keep him away from other dogs, it isn't always possible because of stupid owners like this, unfortunately we can't cure stupid

Your reaction to the dogs running up to you, and Bailey's response is important. It could be making matters worse - can you talk us through exactly what happened & what you felt/did while it was going on?

Where I walk is always busy of dogs running free and owners oblivious to other people and their dogs...I always go to a quieter spot to be honest where I can let mine off in peace for a run around together. Today I took them to the other side where no one was about. I let them have a run and then I put them back on the leads if I see other dogs running free...Bailey is so jumpy that I make sure he is always on the lead if people approach. I know that two staffies bounding up to anyone is quite a big thing, I don't like dogs bounding up to me...so I always have mine on leads....
Today I was getting them to come back to me and put them back on the leads and getting my dogs in the right hands etc to walk off when I turned around and this springer just came from nowhere...that is when they went mad...Well Bailey started barking...he also yelped because of the sore on his leg must of the caught the harness so that with barking, yelping sounded terrible...I shouted to the lady to recall her dog because mine were obviously spooked by it. With that she was screaming at her dog to come back.
I had both dogs on leads on harnesses and I turned the other way and walked away...I was abit shaky to be fair...this was the first both had reacted like that...
I don't know if it was because they were abit pumped up from his run around with Tia or what but when we walk past dogs when he is on leads , they pull towards the dog but never react really bad.
Hope that helps a bit more.

awww im not sure it was your fault as she should have had her dogs under control. Maybe your dogs were as spooked as you

Been for a lovely walk with Tia this morning, past lots of dogs and she was polite and wagging her tail to play. Just come back for a coffee and then off with Big Bad Bailey Boy to see how he behaves.

Mind over matter, Bailey isn't a big bad boy but a boy who has problems, what happened wasn't his fault, he was a dog just being a dog. Often if we change how we think of things the problems are not as bad.

Re: Problems with Bailey again! :(
Well just got back...did not encounter any dogs today, decided to go a different way for some one on one...we passed lots of people and he didn't go to jump up like normal...so that was a bonus..He did pull quite a lot going but coming back calmed down a lot. Seemed a bit nervous without Tia and was reluctant to go at first but he was fine....
I think a lot of back to basics with him and on his own for a week or two to see the improvement. But a good start and well done Bailey today.
