What to do?
Hi everyone,
Just been on a walk with our little Molly, 4 and a half months. A greyhound came to say hi on the lead, the owner said he was friendly, then the wife came along and said oh you'd better move that little dog away from the greyhound. I went to move her and the darn greyhound went for her and bit her back leg as I was lifting her away. The owner dragged his dog off and I held Molly up and away.
She has a huge scratch mark from where the evil greyhound went for her. The owner of the greyhound said oh no now i don't think he bit her......I and he clearly saw said dogs mouth around Mollys leg. I was soooooooooooo angry yet he didnt even tell his dog off, simply said 'oh hes normally alright with little dogs if they're not running away....'
What are you meant to do in these situations?? I was in shock to be honest and said oh its erm okay. But held onto little moll for a minute or so (shes normally not picked up on walks I just felt she needed a hug!)
Moll seems alright now just a slight limp, shes been saying hi to dogs we know are friendly this afternoon (my mum and dads dobie and mastiff cross ) as I didn't want her thinking this was how all dogs were etc.

Re: What to do?
Hi so sorry you went through this horrible situation i hope molly is ok, firstly alot of us on here have been through similar things so we do understand and it infurates most of us that some owners have no control of their dogs!!! i have owned staffords for over 30yrs, and been through this myself, its hard at the time too know the best way too handle the owners as some people don,t like confrontation, but if someones dog bites mine i calmly tell them that they did bite, as owners need too be very aware if their dogs show any aggression!!! you were right too pick molly up as she is still a baby and you put her out of harms way, but please try not too let it stop you socialising with other dogs, i know it puts you off abit but pups are amazingly adaptable and she won,t be put off other dogs at that age just try too find dogs you know are friendly. a mouthful to the owner would have been top of my list , as long as Molly is ok is the main thing

Shes alright now after some food (with some sausage in for a treat). Just bruising and a big scratch i think.
Just so annoyed with the owner. Theres no way I would have let Moll say hi if he'd been honest and said that his two werent to be trusted.
Its definately made me a little more apprehensive of greyhounds. This afternoon we then went around the pet store, got her a lovely new collar and she had a play with a pug/yorkie pup which was really good for her.

Been there too. Sometimes you are just in so much shock you dont really know what to say and it all happens so quickly too.
Best to let her have a play with her known doggie friends and human friends too for that matter, this will then get her confidence back.

Re: What to do?
Loki hasn't been bitten or anything. He's come across two dogs that growled at him and he didn't care, but that's the worst reaction he's had. But don't let it put you off letting your dog meet other dogs. Most people will be honest about whether or not their dog's friendly, and Greyhounds are fine as long as the owner's trained them well. Just have to get back into normality and show her that it shouldn't put her off meeting dogs.

Re: What to do?
I'm extremely wary of any dog since Diesel was snapped on the nose as a pup by a JRT (surprise eh?)
I tend to avoid any dog smaller than mine !
Most of all I try n be 1 step ahead of my 2 and potential dog approaching, watching body language of all of them and the owner too.
It's a tough call but I always ask the owner 'is it ok for the dogs to say hello' ?
I always prewarn that my Diesel is the definition of excited but the worst thing she will do is pee on ur shoes out of super excitement !
95% of dogs we have met have been great. The other 5% have started fine then kinda turned, all the time I'm watching my dogs body language and have got used to when enough is enough or time to move on.
If ur unsure at all id stick to the 5 second hello, they both have a sniff, then move on, no biggy. Might help to build her confidence a bit in the meantime.

Re: What to do?
I would limit her interaction to dogs that you are sure of for awhile to be on the safe side.

Re: What to do?
Glad she is OK. How upsetting for both of you!
I am amazed when owners say, my dog is fine with other dogs (because I always ask), and their dog is emphatically not fine! I have probably been too naive, getting better at watching the other dogs' body language now...
I agree with everyone, some nice playtime with some trustworthy dog friends should do the trick.
