New pup owner, reassurance needed
Hi there guys, So ive been a proud puppy owner for a week now! We have named him Patch. He is 7 weeks old this Saturday, yes, im now aware that is young to be took from mum. I wasn't at the time. None the less the little tyke has settled in with no problems! He sleeps in his bed which is next to mine, and sleep soundly until between 3 and 4 in the morning! In the last week we have wormed him (first tablet, next is due in 2 weeks). He was clear of worms anyway! Yay! Also we put flea stuff on him, not that he is going out anywhere lol! I have him booked in at the vets for couple weeks time for his first set of jabs! I mean surely this is all the necessity anyway and goes without saying?!?! My main concern now is toilet training and his biting! ( I am aware this is why pups should stay with mum a bit longer, as at this time they are learning biting inhibition) But as patch is not with mum, how can i let him know when he bites to hard and punishment kinda thing. As for toilet training and stuff, im using the pads for now, when patch has had his jabs and stuff, we will work on going out for the toilet with walkies and what not. But sometimes when i place him on it he wont use it and he will go elsewhere (normally on the blooming carpet) I tell him off but i don't think that its an effective is it?
Basically guys, i just want either constructive criticism or help and advice on what im doing with my staffy!!
Many thanks in advance for any help x

Re: New pup owner, reassurance needed
It is extremely young to come from his mum , not even 6 weeks old, was there a reason from the breeder, just out of interest. ??
Never mind you are here now with him and thath's all that matters , no turning back the clock, you can search on here for many topics on such subjects and just expect to have your work cut out a lot more as he has missed out on so much from his mum and his littermates.

Thanks, :-) Well Patch`s mum is our neighbours dog. His mum had started to reject them , she wasn't nursing nearly as much as she needed to! We can see the other pups from one of our windows and they don't seem to be doing well :-( Yet our little pup is thriving! Ive suggested my neighbour get them to the vets to no avail :-(

If you're worried about the other pups then the right thing to do is an anonymous call to the RSPCA

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
For the toilet training take him outside every half hour until he goes then lots of praise when he does.
For the biting when he does it let out an ouch loudly then turn around and ignore him.
Perseverance and persisitance pays.
Hope it all goes well

Re: New pup owner, reassurance needed
Hi Loz, welcome to the forum.
Well, firstly you were conned. 5 week old pups are being weaned anyway, so all mums will feed the pups less & less. In other words the breeder didn't want the expense of feeding the pups so they let them go. Happens all too often, I'm afraid.
But never mind, he's with you now! As everyone has said, it's perseverence. If he has an accident don't tell him off, just put him outside & praise him if he goes out there. Don't forget thatpups as young as him do not have full control of their bladder or bowels. If he nips, just say no, firmly (but don't shout) and stop all interaction immediately, just turn your back on him and ignore him. He will pick it all up, but it may take him a bit longer than a pup that has spent another couple of weeks with his siblings.
Good luck! I'm sure he'll be a wonderful companion!

you can take him outside to toilet train as long as its in ur own backyard, just dont take him outside in the front yard where other dogs have walked past, my partners sister is a vet and its fine....with biting just a stern NO and they will eventually understand but it will take time, i have an 8 week old staffy pup and im experiencing the same issues

Re: New pup owner, reassurance needed
that is one cute little puppy!!!
i used to sit with Jellybean and let her chew my hand then yelp or say no bite and i would even pretend to cry. sometimes i put her own paw in her mouth if she got REALLY unruly (which wasn't often) and all those things helped her sort out pretty quickly that she's not to bite. she's still a bit nippy because after you get all that sorted, they start teething/losing their baby teeth but generally they start to get it and eventually they stop or maybe just mouth a bit to get a sense of what's what.
good luck!

Re: New pup owner, reassurance needed
I got my Ruby at 6 weeks, due to the mother not been able to look after all 8 pups and well from visiting our pup once or twice I felt in my heart that I could care for her better than the way I felt the bitch and pups were been cared for so we took her home. Her nipping was bad, but we had to understand why and just to just persist with firm and constant training.
Since we've had Ruby, we added another little addition, Tyson. He's four months now and we got him at the standard 8 weeks and I can hand on heart say that he is the exact same as what she was.. Training doesnt come over night, but it does pay off, persistance, patience and leadership is key.
The way I do it and I know from been on here most would recommend, a loud ouch, or ah ah, or No and ignore them and completely walk away from them works for us.. My 2 hate been ignored, so it works for us
Hope this helps and good luck with your baby

Re: New pup owner, reassurance needed
Thanks RubyRed! Its paying off already! He doesn't start with such a hard nip now, and normally when i tell him no he will stop! If he doesnt, i will ignore him and he now comes over to me with his head now and will lick me! Bless him! The toilet training is also going well only a few accidents to what normally happens Couldnt of asked for a better pup really

Re: New pup owner, reassurance needed
AAww your pup is just too cute!!! I love the way that you have looked after him. Deworming and stuff. That and injections are utterly important.
I have 2 Staffs from puppy and will now be keeping one from my litter. I found it helpfull to take mine outside whenever they woke up. And during the day I put their baskets downstairs and left the sliding door open. They were very good. Few oopsies.
I do hope you keep an eye on the neighbours. I have a friend who is the manager at our local RSPCA and I have seen pups saved too late. Its horrid. And because Staffies are such loving pets the ones that do make it get homed very quickly but only AFTER strict inspections.
Good luck with your pup and most importantly enjoy him.

Totally agree with taking Patch out to toilet train in your own yard even though he hasn't had his jabs yet. It's so important in toilet training to take them out to real grass. We always took Jazz out when we got her so she got used to the feel of the lawn, and used the puppy pads only at night. Now she is 4 months old and dry all night.
Good luck with Patch...such a cutie
