bepanthen?
sky has been wearing her harness alot over the past week and i think it has been rubbing under her front legs. Its a bit scabby and dry. would bepanthan do ok to use just to soothe it a bit? or is there anything else which would be better., We are leaving it off for a few days to give her a rest.

Re: bepanthen?
I wouldn't use bepanthen. My oh tried some on his tattoo and it made it very sore!
I tend to use sudocrem a lot with minor abrasions for dogs. But if the harness is rubbing, it either isn't fitting properly or it isn't padded. I'd adjust it (if you can) or get another one.

Re: bepanthen?
I've only ever used sudocrem or savlon, bepanthen is awesome for nappy rash but I'd stick with good old sudocrem tbh.
With the warmer weather u will prolly fund things will rub a bit more than usual.

Re: bepanthen?
I would also advise to either adjust the harness if possible and to switch to a collar for a few days.

i was about to buy zeus a harness today after work until i read your comment lol. we've been taking him to the park on his flexi lead ever since the weathers been good, but he keeps pulling because hes probably confused when i press the stop button, he ends up almost choking himself and i fear that it'll cause damage to his throat. should i still get a harness?

Re: bepanthen?
i dont like using lead and collar just becaus of that reason, it pulls her neck and i dont like to pull it too hard as it strangles her. sky has fluffy pads on her harness i just think the sores are only because she has worn it alot and with being on wet sand it must of rubbed but i will always use a harness as i think you have more control over them when we need it!

Re: bepanthen?
The thing with collars is you have to teach your dog to walk nicely on a lead & then he won't choke himself anyway.
I don't like harnesses (not saying they're bad, I just don't like them myself) because I don't have full control of my dog's head (big white teeth!). Most harnesses have the lead attachment on the back which gives you very little control over the dog's movement. The ones with a front ring aren't quite so bad.
Bear in mind as well that, by law, a dog in the UK must have a properly fitting collar with an id tag at all times when in public.

Re: bepanthen?
very true about control of the head. maybe when she gets bigger it might be worth using a lead. Sky wears her collar 24/7 just incase she does happen to escape.

Re: bepanthen?
Ruby went through a phase where her front pawpits were sore and dry and she has never worn a harness, think its just some kind of irritation she got. i put sudocrem on her and it healed up over night whenever they got a bit red looking. she hasnt had it for a few weeks now so i hoping its something shes just grown out of.

I'm not keen on leaving a collar on all the time. Dempsey's microchipped so if he did get out he'd be identified, but a collar indoors leaves too many chances of accidents.

I'm not criticizing - just saying that I wouldn't be happy with it myself. I know I wouldn't want a strip of leather around my neck 24/7!

Re: bepanthen?
ah i didnt take it as critisism, though it did read a tad abrupt lol my other half wanted the lap top sorry
i quite often think about them having to wear the strip of leather, especially in this hot weather, but i keep them on loose so they get air moving around under there but the thought of her escaping and me not noticing right away is unbareable. not everyone has a chip scanner, and there are reports of our local stray dog shelter not scanning and then 6 days later rehoming if the owner hasnt managed to track down their pet. Ruby is chipped, but its law to have collar with tag on and it makes good sense to me to leave it on, at least until shes older and properly trained and i know she wont mooch off down the road on her own if one of the kids leaves the door open. other dogs we have owned have been rescues and had wandering tendencies, i think thats what has instilled it into me.

Re: bepanthen?
Yes, I understand that, but I've just heard so many horror stories of unsupervised dogs getting their collars caught on things & strangling.

Re: bepanthen?
wow, really, ive never heard of that in dogs! i have in cats but it wouldnt have even crossed my mind for a dog in a house. cant even think of anything she could get caught on looking around the room. i guess out in the garden there are bushes etc. i remember my neighbours pappilon dog when i was a kid, it was kept on a short chain and it jumped our fence, poor thing was hanging there by its neck i ran out and lifted her back over the fence and she was ok but it was awful to see, dread to think how long it would have taken her to die if i hadnt seen her do it. i guess its the little things nobody would think about that catch us out

Tbh it isn't so much objects as claws. If they scratch themselves & get a claw caught up it could be very dangerous & frightening.
