Looking into BARF

First topic message reminder :

Hi All this is for anyone who feeds BARF but mainly from our BARF rep Caryll lol
Blue has no health problems etc but he is just so hard to please. He has gone back to not bothering with his food again. So I've started to do some research into BARF like allot on here recently.
How much does it cost approx / day or month?
and where can I find good information on what I need to feed him? The sites im finding are rubbish.

Not been on here much & probably won't be for about a week. Went to a show yesterday (Dempsey wasn't entered) and then to watch Ice Hockey. Nest week I'm spending a couple of days at Mount St. Bernard Monastery to catch up with a couple of very old friends who are monks there.

Don't forget that tripe is offal so you can include it in the organ meat part of the diet.

It sounds fine, but you should try to introduce as many different meats as poss in the early days so you'll know which ones he likes/suit him.

It's a whole different world there! We get up with the monks (actually 15 minutes before them at 3am so we can have a quick cup of coffee!), generally chill out & have long chats & then go to bed after Compline which means lights out at 8pm!

And I love it! It sounds awful, and for some it may well be, but it's a chance to completely wind down. The kids are looking after Dempsey & they have strict instructions re: his walks/food etc.

The show was good, it's the most important BT show on the calendar & people come from all over the world. Yesterday there were people from USA, Australia, Poland, Slovenia, France & Venezuela. And that's just the ones I know about!

Oh, and some fantastic dogs!

I found page 100 useful. Its a 2 week basic sample menu. It doesnt give quantities that i can see, but gives an idea of what to feed.

Caryll, what are your thoughts on this? I think it seems ok. I ordered the book last night without realising it was online!

Just got back from the butchers and he has changed it to a butty shop last week as he could no longer make money being a butchers. He was the last non halal meat butcher in the area. Sad times.

There is also a 3 day market in Blackburn which has a butchers on it. Might go and see them and see what they can provide and get some stuff off them.
m just looking forward to getting the meat and bones now and making a start. I've read that much on the subject im 100% ready and happy about feeding Prey Model / Raw diet.

I wish i was that confident with it!
I really think it would be the best diet for Logan as he is becoming sooooo fussy lately.
But something is still holding me back and not sure what!!
I think i might get it wrong and make him ill or something!
When we go away and take him with us theres always gonna be a supermarket or butcher too so i dont really have an excuse.

You will be fine. To be honest I get the impression if you feed any meat and bones that agrees with him you will be fine. The bigger the varity of meats etc the better.
You can measure the food at first to get an idea how the amount roughly they need after that just chuck some meat in a bowl and watch the dogs weight. If they look skinny feed more and less if they put too much on.

You make it sound so simple! And i suppose it is really.
Think i'll be having another chat with O/H tonight about it! I just nipped home and gave him some lamb ribs. (Not o/h, I mean Logan!!) He looked so excited! He doesnt look excited when you put his dry down!

Think i need a freezer for Logan.........(for his food before anyone reports me to the RSPCA!!!)

Know what you mean. Blue never eats his food straight away. He normaly only eats it cos the cat looks at it

Well he loved the ribs! All gone by the time i came home, and he's just polished off 1/2 a heart. I put it in his dry food so he had the choice. No problems....he just pulled the heart out and munched it all away! Hasnt touched the dry now. Just pulled out some more lamb ribs for his breakfast but i deffo need to get some chicken necks/carcasses etc. lol

You given anything to Blue yet?

I've managed to convince hubby now too. He just says yes to keep me happy now! And a happy me makes his life easy (ish!!)

I have given blue ribs which he threw back up again. But that was the first bones he had and may have eaten them a bit too quickly.
He also had last week a lambs heart, kidney & liver and he loved all 3. He liked it that much he tried to climb on the sides to get more out of the bag, little bugger
The necks are all right, they just look like spare ribs but pink. The carcus that I got last week however was areful. I had to cut the offal/meat out mysef

we are just gonna work out a menu for Logan and cost it all. I was just gonna give him the carcass as it comes!! lol.

I'll have to try kidney. not done that one yet. which animal was it from?

but he's gonna have more ribs for breakfast until i can get some more bits in for him.

The kidney was from the carcus of a lamb that I managed to pick up for £2

are you gonna stick with one meat or give him a variety for the 1st few weeks? Just watched a vid on you tube that said to stick with 1 meat for approx 3 weeks to see how they go on it and they tolerate it to start adding in other one by one?

Im more inclined to sticking to one meat. Like you said until he has settled and used to his raw diet. But I will probably order a few different meats so I have an alternative if he goes off what im feeding.

Think we're gonna do lamb 1st. I know he likes that. His bum is reeking now tho and he's only had a few ribs and half a heart. It stinks!!

Yeah Blues did. But I think thats because the way they digest the food is different from the way they digest commercial foods. Once they have got used to the new diet it should become better than before. If not you can always get some of them charcoal biscuits

I just give blue a chicken neck to see if he liked it and he loved it. He played with it for 5 mins first flinging it all around the kitchen. Just threw a bottle of bleach over the kitchen once he had finished

Think I'll be doing a lot of cleaning too! Logan can't keep them in his bowl, I don't blame him really!! I'll have to get him to eat it on a towel or something!

It mentions it in that book you showed me. It says that it is natural for the dog to drag the meat about before eating it. This is why many people feed it in their garden and kitchen or other tiled areas that can easily be washed down afterwards.
Funny cos they don't tip their bowl out and kick the biscuits around the kitchen

too true, I don't feed raw and it stays in her dish, where it belongs, but a bone thats just ewww

We have just started Billy on the raw diet, he has had so far bits from our freezer.
I work in Mayfair in London and yesterday went to the local butchers (very posh) to see if they had any bones. He gave me 2 knuckle bones and a massive bag of meat scraps , well went I opened the meat up, it looked much better than the stuff I buy from tescos for us. Hopefully I can get my bones and scaps from there in future as I dare not go to the butchers near where I live, not sure what meat it is that they are selling.

Im still working out where the best place to get Logans stuff from would be. And trying to get the weights right etc!! Think i'm thinking about it a bit too much! I just need to bite the bullet i think!

So far on my shopping list are: Minced lamb, Lamb ribs,Lamb heart, and a bag of mixed lamb bones.
If he takes to the lamb (which i am sure he will) he will be geting other meats for at least a week on each meat.

So for approx 3 weeks just lamb, then week 4 introduce chicken wings & chicken carcass etc, then week 5 see if he likes beef.

Wish i'd not bothered buying another big bag of food last week now! Not really gonna use it now he wont touch it! I'll take it to the Blue Cross/RSPCA i think.

I was gonna take the rest of Blue's kibble to the local RSPCA if I had to buy another bag. Any rescue centre will be made up to get it

Same here, I have two different bags which are nearly full (don't ask why) so they would love them, just holding one for another week to make sure.

Blue can you let me know why you are ordering chunks and no mince, is that because in mince there is more fat?

Ive been looking for lamb chunks, but think he'll be ok with minced lamb as long as i give him a bone to gnaw on too.

I've already halved that by looking on Durham Animal Feeds.

I keep changing my mind but think i've got a good list of a few items to get him use it :

Minced lamb - 20lbs =£8.64
Liver chunks - 8kg =£9.36

I will be going to pick it up on Thursday on the way back from the vets.

Mnaged to get a freezer for £20 from one of the lads i work with. He's gonna bring it to work next week! Then Logan will have his own freezer!! lol. Havent got room in the kitchen tho, so it'll be going under the stairs!

He was one happy pup this morning when he got 170g of ground lamb!! Wolfed it right down. Last night he had a bone and some tripe.
I've already noticed a change in his 'nuggets' (poop). Seems smaller and lighter in colour. (I like to know whats coming out!) Think i just need to keep an eye on him that i'm getting the balance right and keep him 'loose'. ie not constipitated.
He's gona have more lamb tonight for his tea!

ERM....I kinda wimped out. The vet told me to not give in to Logan if he wont eat his kibble and to keep taking it up so he has 2 choices, eat or not.

Thinking about it i'm a bit annoyed with myself for letting him talk me out it. I only want the best for Logan so now i'm not really sure what to do anymore!!!!

Billy was getting really fussy with his kibble, he would not eat it unless we put mash pot on, fish or gravy, so I just changed it to raw last week, and now he eats everything, and show no signs of slowing down, in fact if I put a full pig in front of him I wonder if there would be anything left.

I wonder why the vet told you no,eventually Logan would eat it cause he will be starving, but he won't have enjoyed it, just go with your instinct, you know Logan better.
