Smile A few questions about our 9 week old pup

Post by x0gawjus0x Tue Jul 17 2012, 07:16

Hellooo there i've just signed up today Smile what a wonderful website & im proud to say ive now joined the staffy club!

This is our first pup, and my fiance is in love with staffs so i gave in to him Tongues..
Anyway, we took him for his injections yesterday and he has a really big lump on his back where the injection went in, is this normal? It doesn't seem to be hurting him because hes fine and dandy!

Also, im not sure on how to go about this "cage" thing and associating it with something good? Because at the moment he is put in there when hes bad for a "timeout" and he starts howling after a few minutes.. Ive already tought him to sit and lay down but thats about it lol. He's very naughty never listens and chews up just about anything he can.. When he gets told STOP and in the cage hes fine when he comes out for 20 mins or so then hes just a little bugger again Sad

Has anyone got any pointers/advice? Is there anyway aswell to get him to sleep out of our bedroom because we have laminate flooring and all we hear when we're trying to sleep is pitter patter of his feetsies!
Thanks Big Grin

Aww congrats on ur furbaby. The lump will disperse on a day or two, my pup had the same.
The crate/cage shouldn't be used for punishment, ideally u wanna put pup in the crate at nighttime, cover the crate with a blanket to make him feel more secure. A smelly tshirt or yrs or ur partners in the crate can help pup settle too.

Pups are full on energy machines, he will be naughty, u need to set boundaries for him. Does he have toys to play with ? A stagbar is a really good thing to fulfil the chewing desire of a staffy.

When he's naughty, a vocal correction such as 'no' or 'aaa!' if he carries on, them remove him from the room for a cpl mins timeout.

The crate needs to be his lil safe haven, somewhere nice.

He will need lots of attention, lots of love but it will settle down in a few weeks, just like a newborn baby the early weeks can be a grind!

When u put him to bed in his crate at night, he will howl, cry, bark. U can ignore it, just let him out every few hours fir a pee, then put him bk in.

Out of interest, is he kc reg ? And what do u feed him ?

He doesnt listen to "aaa" which is why we put him in the crate, i will start putting him in the bathroom when he does it - we cant let him wonder everywhere yet as hes weeing non stop lol! Hes always excited and prancing around and snogs absolutely everyone/everything! He hasnt learnt to hold in his wee/poo yet which is kinda anoying but im sure we will get there - we got him friday just gone. Yeah i will try that then from now on i wont use the cage for time out, ill put him in it tonight and see what happens - doubt anything will though except river or wee and howling A few questions about our 9 week old pup 77458 haha

Yes he is kc reg, atm were feeding him pedigree puppy dry food thing? Is that any good :S Weve also given him rice/chicken as a treat for some meals and milk. How did you toilet train your pup, atm were using news paper and taking him out every 20-30 mins but he still seems to have ultd amount of wee and just goes anywhere/everywhere! xx

He will also have to go out after a nap, eating or playing. Keep him outside until he goes and than give lots of praise.

Hi and welcome!

Take him out as soon as he wakes up, after feeding, before and after play and about once an hour. Wait with him until he does something. If he doesn't do anything after a few minutes, go back in then go out again after 10 minutes and repeat.

Make a note of when he goes and when he gets fed and drinks and you should be able to see a pattern develop.

Bakers is probably one of the worst foods out there. If you want something that's a similar price then Skinners Field and Trail is a lot better.

If you can afford it then something like Orijen, Applaws, Fish4Dogs or Acana would be ideal if you want to feed dry.

There are also plenty of mid quality, mid priced foods like Arden Grange, Wainwrights, Simpsons, Vitalin, James Welbeloved, Natural Dog Food Company, Burns etc.

Bakers, Wagg, Alpha, Chappie, Harringtons, Eukanuba, Pedigree, Purina, Hills, Iams, Winalot, Royal Canin and supermarket own brand foods are all to be avoided.

Have a look at www.whichdogfood.co.uk for help choosing a food.

Once you've chosen your food, make sure you change over gradually, over a period of a week or so to avoid an upset tum (unless of course the Bakers is causing a runny bum, in which case, I'd probably just swap straight onto a better food.)

when toilet training our pup we took her out every 20-30 mins, and we took a treat out with us, if she did something we gave her a treat as she is very very food orientated and she seemed to ignore praise/fuss. as soon as we started with the little treats she would go out and pee every time, we got to know her poop patterns quickly so would stay out a bit longer and hold off giving her the treat until she did both. worked really well, never had a poop in the house and probably 10 wees in the house in total. we got her at just under 8 weeks, shes now 20 weeks and its still going well, we no longer use treats when she goes out for a wee but at about 12 weeks she did start to aknowledge verbal praise and fuss so we reduced the use of the little treats and just praised her.

with the crate, we use the command 'quiet time' when she goes in, she knows this means nap time and if shes getting too bouncy/naughty she goes for a quiet time. she loves her crate, yesterday we removed it for day times though so shes only crated at night, she seems to miss it though and keeps going out into the hall where it is and climbs in even without her bed in there. we dont associate the crate with punishment as such as we dont tell her off and shut her in we just tell her quiet time and she goes in and we give her a little treat in her bed and close the door.
