Red eyes after training Empty Red eyes after training

Post by Steven Wed Jul 11 2012, 22:14

Had my 6 month old puppy at the vets last week (Friday) as his eyes looked awful red, the vet prescribed some eye drops and said that it was most likely just a bit of dust that got into it.

It started improving but today i took him to dog training classes for the first time, he didnt get on very well (lol) And had 2 ovb pull at his lead/collar.

His eyes now are bright red and im wondering if the pulling could be the cause? and if so if a harness would help this instead of his collar.

Also how many times do you think before he settles with the other dogs? He was snapping at them all today.
Near the end he was a bit better and listened a bit.
Then all the dogs got toys and he was then scared and hid between me and my partner so no one could get his toy (We ended up having to take this toy home!!)

yes it could be the pulling that is causing the red eyes. Are you using a choke or half choke collar? They are the worst for this. You could try a harness and see how it goes. He will be overwhelmed with all the other dogs especially if he hasn't been before. He will get used to them it's a big thing for him seeing all those potential playmates at one time. You have to keep calm when he is snapping at the dogs as you will transmit your stress to him. Distract him rather than telling him off for the snapping or he will associate the other dogs with getting told off. Lily was terrible at pup class I used to be so stressed out. She was the only Staffy and gave them a bad name! However she settled and it was worth it. Once I calmed down she did.

It could be the over excitment/pulling being the cause. A harness might be worth a go but this won't stop him pulling but will balence the weight. Might be worth a go.

He sounds possesive with his toys, Moo is massivly, if she has a stick and a dog tries to take it she will growl and be most unladylike lol, take it away and she will play!

Still early days but keep up the training and socialization Xx

We are using the ezydog collar and lead. Can you recommend a good harness and how do you measure them for the perfect fit. Thanks again

We prefer a harness most of the time. If he is a big puller he can indeed hurt himself. You have to work on correcting the behaviour. When he does it turn around in the opposite direction. It will take some time to get any where but he will learn. If he is overly excited during class try going for a walk before class so he doesn't have as much energy

You've had Titan (I think it's Titan?) for about a week, haven't you?

He's still adjusting to his new home/owners/surroundings so he'll be a bit jumpy for a while. Although a harness will stop him choking himself, it will lose you some control, and you'll have to be prepared for that. You might want to consider a belt & braces method - a Halti head collar + a Halti harness, with a double ended lead. Then you can clip one end of the lead to the harness & the other end to the head collar.

Also, try teaching him "Watch". Hold a treat up in front of your face & as soon as he looks at it, say "Watch" & give him the treat. Repeat this as often as you can, and soon you'll be able to say "Watch" and he'll look at you to see where the treat is. Sometimes that's enough to break a dog's concentration on other distractions.

Great advice given above.

Our male's eyes did the same. Whenever he does lots of running around his eyes still go a bit red, but nothing like it used to. We used a harness (normal nylon strap harness) and his eyes were still very red after walking, but I must also mention that he was at fault, because he used to pull quite badly. A while back we bought a harness with a chest plate and all the tension is then put on the shoulders instead of the neck. No problems now and now he also walks on lead like a champ.

Thanks for replys i will go and have a look. I like the sound of the harness and collar attached.

I never even thought on a walk before hand (The classes is about 10min walk) will extend that walk there next week.

Yea i keep bearing in mind hes new, its a week today we have had him Love Struck , im just worried of him attacking another dog at the classes.

I have been doing the walking the other way when he pulls, the woman at the classes told me just to tug hi back and shout pssst.

I know what you mean with the treat up at my eyes, they told us how to do that y-day at the classes but we had to say 'leave it' and that was to distract him from the dogs that was walking past him, that worked so well!

Speaking on that whats the best treat to do this with? the ones the lady at the classes gave me worked well (I presume they had a stronger smell) wheras the white choc buttons (dogs choc) didnt work as well when it came to smelling it threw my hands

We use a harness and colar as well although not a halti. When we pass an area we need head control we just change the lead over to the collar. We dry out vegetables to use as treats. Suki is highly food motivated so we treat alot. Veggies are cheap and nutritious.

At 6 months I wouldn't worry about him being aggressive or attacking. The more you socialize him the better off he will be. If you know anyone with an older well socialized dog that he can walk and interact with that would also be helpfull

Dried liver is often a good tasty treat, but you wouldn't want to use too much of it cause it's quite rich.

The only problem I'd have with that, is did the dog know if you meant "Leave the other dog" or "Leave the treat"? If he's looking at the treat & you say "Leave it"..............

Thanks, any type aof veg apart from Brocolli?
Just normal shop bought liver? ( sick lol)
I see what you mean with the leave it, Titan is suppose to stare at me and its when he looks at the other dogs and get distracted you say leave it to keep him concentrating on me.

We use sweet potatos, cucumbers and cabbage mostly. We have a dehydrator that we hang outside to keep them fresh longer. We fed them to her since she was a pup and she really likes them.

Also there is no such thing as a stupid question other than the one you don't ask Big Grin

We have one that is basically a net that we just hang outside. I think we paid about $10 for it but I'm not sure what is available where you are. I think if you just cooked them in the oven and put them in a freezer it would be just as good
