Biting on the lead

Hi all. Debo is going to be 16 weeks this Friday,some people say it's a dog's terrible two stage. Hope they'are right. He's biting on the lead is getting out of control and is only with me. We are fine on the walk to the park,it's the way back a nightmare. Sometimes "no" it's enough but most of the time he scares me. I tried few things-first I wraped the lead around my hand but he attacked it,not in a playfull way ,he really went for it. i know they can't be agressive at that age but still. Then I tried stepping on the lead really close to his colar so he doesn't have a chance to bit,wait till he's calm and cont walking. Don't know what else could do.

Try wiping some Vicks Vapour rub along the lead. He'll bite it & regret it! It won't do him any harm, but should make him think twice about doing it again!

It'll smell awful, but you can always wash the lead once he stops biting!

Don't wrap the lead round your hand or arm - even a playful leap & bite will get you as well as the lead!

Don't forget the magic command........"Leave!"

As always ,you came to the rescue,thank you. Will try it. He knows the leave command....but only for his toys,he will give any of his toys if asked but that's as far as it goes. Any ideas?

Repetition. Just keep on & on. Sooner or later it'll sink in.

Agree with Caryll on this one. You could also try keeping some treats handy to distract him with

About the treats,I tried the same thing when I was teaching him to leave ( every time he let go off his toy he gets a treat ) ,I think he's to cleaver with the lead. Every time he grabed the lead , I got his attention ,said "leave" ,when he did ,gave him treat but I think he knew what he had to do to get the treat-bit the lead again!

Try keeping the treat in your fist. Let him smell the treat and get him to follow you while still holding the treat. It should distract him long enough to forget about the lead.

I'd just use brief verbal praise & then do a smart march with him walking to heel. When you're training a dog to alk nicely on lead, always do it at a smart, brisk pace. That way, the dog doesn't have time to consider being a pain in the a*se! Lots of right turns (assuming he's on your left!) until he has them perfect, and then introduce some left turns - but don't turn left so fast that you fall over him!

Great advice again from Caryll , this is like a revision course for me as I know I'm going to be going through it all with Tommy in just over a week when he's allowed out

Thanks everyone. He's just pushing his boundaries. Like a week ago he was fine with putting his lead on,now every morning I let him out of his cage,ask him to sit,he sits,one look in the eyes and his off to chew on shoes,play,bites on lead etc. So it's like back to basics-back in the cage and start all over again....Oh pleasure of having a puppy

It will pass just have patience. Still not a very fun time though

Tried this morning, he was better, marching doeasn't give him a chance to bit. I've noticed that he starts to bite every time after crossing the road. Every time before we cross I ask him to sit after ok command he's going for the lead.

Just another thought, my pup was biting the lead all the time and I took a little spray water bottle with me and every time he did it, I'd spray him and he stopped pretty quickly, the spray bottle has been a god send with me.

It doesn't harm him and on a hot day, quite refreshing lol

Oh how he loves the Vicks or a vinegar.

get a chain lead and use treats to keep the mind occupied when walking coachies are really good only 1cal

chain lead worked for us - Jellybean is about 20 weeks old and she was doing exactly all those things. we were told chain lead by Alpha Dogs (group dog training in London) and sure enough... if she does still go for it now and then, it's over quickly. they said it was frustration at not wanting to do what you wanted, but they eventually cave if you're consistent and don't give in.

Also, in a couple of weeks yours will want walkies and will come for the lead - we couldn't even get Jelly to go out in the rain a month ago, now it's no problem.

Lastly, Jelly was getting REALLY scary for me too, nudging my leg with her nose, biting me calves, jumping up in a bitey, non-playful way to get what she wanted. If a firm NO didn't work, we threw her out of the room into another puppy-proofed, closed off room (the kitchen and lounge are attached and all have doors, so we threw her in the kitchen) and she came around really quickly. no more of that.

that's not to say she's now doing other boundary pushing things, but as you said, the joys of raising a puppy...! the advice Caryll and the others gave is great, I'm sure you'll get through soon.

how big should be the chiain lead,should it be specially for puppies? It sounds llike a frustrations -he does it when we leaing the park or I ask him to sit before we cross the road. Thanks again

I didn't like the idea either - but it's not the collar, just the lead itself. it's not one of those all in one slip lead/collar things that could choke her. Her collar is the same cloth one as always and is fine. We have a padded collar for her as well.

You can get puppy chain, which is finer, but we opted for a notch above that. It's just like using the lead we had before, except she stopped biting it after one or two outings when she realized it wasn't chewable.

No, I just don't like chain leads. Pups can get their teeth caught in the links,a nd if they do pull you can't shorten the lead without hurting your hands.

I much prefer to teach "Leave" and use a softex or leather lead.
