Re: what food is best
Bakers is not great, no, check the list of recommended ones Steve posted above.
If you decide to change the food please do so gradually, mixing a little of the new one in with the old. You will avoid upset tummies this way.

Re: what food is best
Almost anything is better than Bakers! Absolutely packed with additives that can make your dog hyper & have allergy problems.
Have a look through the link Steve gave you & gradually change over to one of those.

Re: what food is best
Beta looks pretty bad too after looking at the ingredients:
Cereals (min. 4% Wholegrain, min. 4% Rice), Meat and Animal Derivatives (min. 14% Meats, min. 4% Chicken), Vegetable Protein Extracts, Oils and Fats, Derivatives of Vegetable Origin (min. 0.5% Beet Pulp), Vegetables (min. 0.5% Chicory), Minerals.
Cereals are the first listed ingredient which means it mainly contains cereal (offers no nutrional value to your puppy), instead of meat. The listed meat source is 'meat and animal derivatives' which means it could be anything in there, who knows what that means? Minimum 14% meat is not good enough either.
As Galadriel asked, what is your budget? It all depends on that really.
Zeus is on Applaws puppy food which contains no grains, no cereals, 75% meat and 25% vegetables, but it is a bit dearer than Beta.

Re: what food is best
I wouldn't feed beta either.
If you can afford it then go for something like Applaws, Fish4Dogs, Orijen or Acana.
Natural Dog Food Company I think has a similar daily feeding cost to purina beta, cheaper if anything but is much better. Also Arden Grange and Simpsons.
Skinners (field and trial) is the best really cheap food IMO.
Have a look at http://www.whichdogfood.co.uk/ might be helpful

Re: what food is best
I was feeding Ralph Royal Canin, but after a while he'd only eat when i mixed it with something else like egg or yoghurt. The guy in our local pet shop reccommended Symply. The first ingredient is Turkey (30%), then rice, oats, egg, sunflower oil, beet pulp, turkey digest, salmon oil, turkey fat, minerals and seaweed. He seems to love it. No artificial stuff. I also heard Bakers is like giving the dog McDonalds!
Sometimes I mix in that frozen raw stuff you get from pets at home - just to vary his diet a bit. Don't know if that's the right thing. Advice would be good!?

Re: what food is best
Looking at the ingredients, Symply looks quite good. I don't buy dry food, so I can't say how the price compares.
If you're going to add frozen raw meat then don't mix it with the dry, raw & dry have different digestion times & it can upset the stomach. It would be better to feed the raw meat in the morning & the dry at night.
If you're going to cook the meat first, then there's no problem in mixing it in.

Ah really - I had no idea. I'll stop doing that then! Thanks for that. Although as yet, no upset tummies, but I don't want to tempt fate....

Good! Only thing is it's hard to get hold of - not many places do it so you have to plan ahead!

If your budget is low Skinners do a good hypoallergenic one. Think its salmon n rice or something. I used to feed JWB when I fed dry food and my girls did really well on the lamb and veg one.

Ralph likes a bit of yoghurt mixed in with his dry food - you could give that a go. Someone told me it's good for their bones. Although he will eat it without.

Re: what food is best
try putting some water in it to make it soggy. zeus was on wainwrights lamb and rice too and i didn't have any problems with it. you can also get doggy gravy which i put in his food sometimes just to give him a different taste and he really enjoys it.

If you're going to use yoghurt, please only use the plain pro biotic ones - definitely not low sugar! The sugar substitutes can be poisonous to dogs.

Put it down for 15 minutes, if he doesn't eat it then pick it back up again and put it down at his next feeding time. If he doesn't eat it again after 15 minutes, do the same. Don't feed anything between meals. It might take a day or two but he'll soon start eating when he's hungry and realises he's not going to get anything else (providing he's not ill of course) a healthy dog won't starve itself.
If you start adding things to his food to encourage him to eat then you run the risk of creating a fussy eater.

Agree. Whatever you plan to feed your dog has to be what he eats! He honestly won't starve himself. Sooner or later he'll realise that the food you put down tastes ok after all!

Brilliant advice btw galadriel - this works for my uncle's bijon frise who is fed 'human scraps' for the most part until she comes to stay with us!

It's true, they're not daft! If you pander to them, they'll soon have you feeding them caviar and smoked salmon (Disclaimer: don't feed raw salmon to a dog without freezing it for at least 24 hours beforehand )
