£140 for a new pup?? Empty £140 for a new pup??

Post by brophski Sat Feb 11 2012, 15:27

So I was having a gander at the puppies online when I came across staffies for £140 no papers. Am I right in thinking a) this is a little cheap and b) with no papers, it could be anything?

I've text the lady and she has replied saying they are lovely and available March, brindle black and white. I asked why cheap she said no papers, but they can be seen with mum and dad who are both friendly!

I often think everything is dodgy, it's just surely they should be more than this?

James.

It may be above board, it may not. It's very difficult to say when the parents & pups aren't registered - it makes you wonder
a. why they're not registered &
b. why did they bred the litter knowing this.

£140 sounds cheap but you have no guarantees of health or parentage with that.

£140 for a new pup?? Empty Re: £140 for a new pup??

We bought Tilly "cheap" for 250 notes as her dad wasn't KC registered, when we got her the breeder asked us to keep in touch with photos etc, but when I did she never replied. Believe I had fallen victim to a backyard breeder but to be perfectly honest as soon as I saw her I wanted her and never regretted a thing, and she is the bestest dog ever ever ever.
My advice to you would be , got to a proper breeder with all papers if you are adamant you want a puppy with papers. If you just want a puppy then the resues get them in too, If that is not your goal then go and look round the rescues anyway, it;s what we will be doing eventually.
If you are anything like me (soft as sh**) then don't go and have a look at the dogs if you are unsure as you will come away with one anyway.

It does sound strange. i would visit rescue centres first, they often get puppies in and if not there are so many that need loving homes that are a few months old.

Agree, a rescue is a far better option.

If we can do our bit to help stop BYB then there won't be 1000's in rescues.

If you want to buy a pup, it should be from KC registered parents, and if not, rescue!

Sorry, really annoys me staffs having a litter, sold for £140, to people they don't know, or where its going.

Breeding should be left to the profesionals not the amuture. To them, what they think, is a quick buck!

Grrr, rant over lol Xx

£140 for a new pup?? Empty Re: £140 for a new pup??

I think that's quite cheap. In London you can get a staff without papers for 50 quid. KC ones are never more then £300. (More if they're blue -sigh-)
However if they don't have papers they may not be full breed, of course if you like the look of both parents its easier to judge.
I don't think you need to be registered with the kc to breed good dogs and care about your dogs. Of course its not the best idea to be selling staffy pups at the moment, kc registered or not. If I bred them myself I would make potential owners sign a contract stating that if they were ever unable to keep the dog they would be under obligation to have it returned to the owner.
Any fool can buy two kc registered dog and breed them, same as any fool can buy a collie and a lab and let them cross breed. Kc breeders aren't always necessarily the most scrupulous of folk, they're just people like everyone else.
I've heard plenty of stories of kc breeders over breeding, selling stud dogs past their prime etc..

No, you're right, but a non-registered dog will almost certainly not have the relevant health checks carried out on the parents or the pups.

In my opinion........ >Smile

You first need to decide wether u want a KC reg pup who is to the stafford standard (ie. looks like a proper staff) who will have had the relevant health checks or who will be clear by birth. In this case u will need to find a good and ethicall breeder who breeds without colour or money as the first point of call, i would expect to pay between maybe £350 and £550 for this.

Your other option which imo is by far the best one.....

Is rescue!!!!!
There are thousands and thousands of staffords in cold dark kennels waiting for a sofa to call thier own (i no i work in one). You can have your pick of colour, sex, age and have the rescue centre match a staffords personality exactly to suit your lifestyle.
If its a pup your after you will be amazed how quick one will come up. We have so many pregnant mothers coming in to our rescue and i no all other rescues do as well. The poor bitches have thier litters in a foster home and pups are usually ready to adopt between 8 and 12 weeks old.

I think most rescues will ask for between £100 and £150 as a donation for the dog but this includes netuering/spaying and all injections etc....

Yeah I would love to have one from the rescue centre, so i'm open to that also. I've spoken to a few and they are going to let me know when they get any pups or young ones available. Amazingly at the moment they have all other dogs.I've also been looking on pets4homes and there is quite a few on there, although private breeders. I'm just waiting for the confirmation date on my house, and then I'll schedule the puppy.

Personally I think rescue centres should be government funded, and they do a great job considering the small amount of donations they get :-)

Please be careful with online selling sites. There are so many scams on them - like selling cross breeds as pure bred & giving false pedigree papers etc. If you're not bothered about the dog being registered with the KC, then I really would go for a rescue from a proper rescue centre.

Not really. The only thing you can do is to get all the registration deatils of both parents & then check them with the kennel club. They can give you deatils like who owns each dog, what the dogs' colouring is, how old they are etc. But that's no guarantee that it's all above board. There are many people on these sites who are totally bona fide, but there are also many who are not.

Personally, I would always go to a recommended breeder (ie one that has been passed on to me by the breed club), and would ask to see all health certificates for the dog and the bitch, plus a copy of each dog's pedigree.

If you have the kc registered names for the sire and dam then you can check the health test results for the parents on the kennel club website. If both parents are clear then the puppies will be. These are genetic tests for L2-HGA and HC. It will also show if they have been eye tested for PHPV.

We bought Bella with no papers. Dad was reg'd but mum wasn't, however we got to see both parents and how they all interacted. Both parents were great looking dogs with great tempraments. Bella seems to be the same and i wouldn't give her up for anything. At the end of the day it's what you want in a dog.

because over here if you dog is a "type" with no papers, it can be taken off you and killed. Then there is the health aspects, if you have papers you can check to see if it clear from disease

Staffs in the UK (and possibly the world, I don't know) have genetic health issues (L-2-HGA Hydroxyglutaric Aciduria, HC – Hereditary Cataracts, PHPV – Persistent Hyperplastic Primary Vitreous, PPSC – Posterior Polar Subscapular Cataract, HD - Hip Dysplasia) and all breeders should screen for these ailments. There are DNA tests available for the first two, but the others should be checked annually in both parents to ensure that they are not present. Except HD, which should be checked at 12 months +.

Most (probably 99.9%) non-registered dogs will not have been tested for any of these problems.

Sapphire isn't registered but i know her mum, dad, and grandma s i know where she came from, but i paid £500 for her.

Some people arn't out for the money, some just want to make sure the dogs go to a good home.

Very good question!

If everyone turned their noses up at dogs without papers then there would be a lot more dogs in kennels. Yes backyard breeding doesn't hep this but accidents do happen, just like how we can have an accident and become pregnant, the same can happen with dogs.

If you are willing to rescue a dog from the kennels without any papers then surely you are willing to adopt a puppy that doesn't have papers.

Personally i really couldn't care less, the animal is born already and deserves as much love and a lovely home just like KC registered dogs
