My puppy staffy - New Member
My lovely new staffy called Phoenix is adoreable.
I've only had her a day and she is very tactile and out of the litter she came from was the most shy and innocent looking. her brothers and sisters were running around wild.
Im just wondering if her pleasant nature will stay this way?
Also is it a good idea to let her sleep in my bed?
Any advice on potty training would be good too, Ive rubbed a old blanket in her urine and put it in the kitchen to try to learn to to go to there to go to the toilet. I also have took her outside for a wee first thing on the morning. She seems to prefer wet tinned food compared to dry food. Should i try to stop her eating it as i was told it can make her poo more runny.
Thanks in advance for any advice
Carl

Re: My puppy staffy - New Member
hi and welcome..
when you are outside and want her to go to the toilet say a particular word when she goes ( I used widdles on my 2 ) After a while she will associate that word with the action and you can put her out and say it..and she should go there and then!
Start as you mean to continue..if she will always be allowed in your bed, let her. But if you want her in your bed but then don't really want her to sleep in your bed as she gets older, it won't be fair on her.
If she whinges and carries on in the night etc just ignore her. She will learn it doesn't get her anywhere ..
There are lots more tips other folk on here can give you.
She sure looks a darling in your avatar..can't wait to see lots more pics of her!

Re: My puppy staffy - New Member
Hi & welcome - what a pretty girl!
If you socialise her from a very young age (as soon as she's had her vaccinations) and train her properly there's no reason why her nature should change at all!
If you want her to sleep on your bed, fine. But as Vanessa says, if you're going to change your mind when she's fully grown she'll get confused.
I wouldn't personally leave anything down with urine on it. I take it you'd prefer her to go in the garden? If so, then take her out there every hour (and after food, sleep & play) and say "toilet" or whatever word you want to use, and when she wees or poos give her loads of praise & maybe a treat. If she has an accident indoors say nothing at all - just put her outside, and then clean up inside! Don't tell her off because she won't understand what she's done wrong. Staff are usually quite quick to catch on.
Please don't feed her tinned food if you can help it. It's about 70% water, and not at all good for their teeth. If you use dry food & she isn't keen, try pouring a little bit of warm water over it to soften it until she's used to eating it.

I was listening to the vet on the radio this afternoon and he said one of the best things you can do for your puppy is to take them to puppy school once they have had their needles..they get to mix with other dogs and people, and between 8 and 16 weeks they learn so much...He said every puppy should have to go!

Yeah im gonna take her to a puppy school in the next couple of weeks after he gets his final injections. Cant wait to get her to socialise and pick up some tips on training her. She is so sweet and not at all hard to handle.

Re: My puppy staffy - New Member
If you socialise your puppy with lots of friendly dogs and people she should continue to be friendly.
Also start your training as you mean to go on.
For toilet training i use the word wee-wee and they assosciate that with outside and toileting. Find a word she responds to and stick with it, but also praise her loads when she does go and give a reward if needed.
If you wanted toilet training pads, I have found the best ones are £5 for 30 in B&M bargins, but others are probably just as good.
Keep up the hard work cos time and perserverance will pay off.
If I can help please shout
